Had the injector seals changed today. Picked it up after work and get about 1.5 mile down the road and I had a sudden partial power loss and I think the engine sounded noisy like a tappet had broke. Then I noticed the massive smoke screen I was creating followed by the engine revving up on its own and producing a heck of a lot more white smoke. So pulled over and turned off landy but still running so engaged first gear stepped hard on brake and let the clutch out and the engine stopped. Fortunately garage had not closed yet and came around and picked it up. I am thinkingthe fuel injector seal work has gone wrong somewhere. I even got lr parts to. I wonder if an injector had popped out or something might be the reason for the broken tappet noise. Garage said they will call me tomorrow. I'll update tomorrow.

Not good....I hope a piston is not holed.
Read recently on here about people not properly draining the fuel prior to pulling the injectors for a seal change. First Cylinder fills with fuel. All injectors changed, then hydro lock and mechanical damage to the cylinder/ piston that was first injector to be changed soon after start up...normally #1. Here's hoping that is not what happened. |

I hope it's just they have done a job and not sealed one properly. It's then filled the motor with diesel and the oil level has gone up and it's started to run away by running on is own oil.

Hopefully just one injector stuck open.
'Hydraulicking' would sound lick a stuck valve. |

That is what happened, an O ring had failed. I would not say they did a bad job it is just one of those things. I have used that garage for nearly 8 years. The landy is back now and running ok and they even steam clean the engine, that was a job I was going to do so saved me a job. And no charge for the rework. I get the impression that it is such a tight fit that O rings can get a bit damaged when putting injectors back in. It is probably why no one want to touch that job unless it was at fault which mine was, difficult to start when cold. Now it has new injector seals and new fuel pump as it was getting really noisy. marto |

Oh heck bad luck, I have not heard of the seals failing to that extent before. I suppose the seal in question could have been twisted during the fitment to the injector preventing it from sealing to the head adequately. Either way bad luck and I am glad it is sorted now.

make sure they changed the oil as the diesel makes the oil very thin. On a plus point it works like a engine flush and inside your motor will be sparkling 2014 - current ..... 2003 defender td5 90 (my car)

^^oh yes.
We used to add a 1/2ltr to 1 litre of diesel to the oil changes to clean up big diesel engines in construction plant. It does a brilliant job. Could they not put a thin smear of grease around the o-ring, or inside the hole. Not a dollop of grease, just a thin, thin smear. If nipping the o-ring was such a risk, why not? Always LIGHTLY lubricate O/rings. Always change the oil when you do the seals as it's impossible not to get diesel leaking.
