POLAR 3

Never heard any mention of this before...but it seems it's been in the pipeline for quite a long time

"The Land Rover Defender may also come with the eight speed dual clutch transmission and this is perfect for off the road driving. Right now the system has been given the name of POLAR 3 and it is able to deal with 442 torque."

"The POLAR 3 demonstrator vehicles were developed with the collaboration of Drive System Design (manual) and Ricardo (DCT automatic). Land Rover is confident that POLAR 3 will be more efficient than current off-road drivelines, but the company is giving nothing away when it comes to the final design or the initial production applications for the transmission. One guess might be the all-new Defender “pure” Land Rover, due in 2018. This would provide the ideal platform to demonstrate the off-road benefits of the DCT."

At last, a bit of news that could result in a better performance off road.
Access to the whole range of 8 ratios, from "crawl" to overdrive, without having to use a transfer box. This should be seamless and never get caught in the wrong range.

Towing heavy trailers, set off in the lowest gear and away you go!

Off road. Dual clutch, almost instant changes, would be great for changing down a gear on tough climbs, or dropping a gear or two for better engine braking without it running away in between.

Of course it will be all electronically controlled, mega complicated and tied into stability control, traction control, and a new generation terrain response. But unlike anything else they've rolled out this has the potential to work better off road.

Now, how about some locking diffs???
