The Defender seems to have gone out with a wimp rather than a bang. What Solihull should have done was to use the last year of production to give us a genuinely "special edition" rather than the one we got. Different seats, wheels and paint job are something we can all do. What was needed was a truly momentous Defender to make everyone stand up and take note, Anyone who bought one should be the envy of us all.
Solihull should have given us a model with a galvanised chassis and bulkhead as standard. They should have gone the distance and put the effort in at production level to give us a Defender that did not leak into the footwells. If they can issue bulletins to dealers as to how to fix leaks this should have been done at factory level. Throw in a fix by putting some care into assembling and fitting the maingearbox/transfer box shaft and we'd have something worth shouting about. Would not have cost the earth and they'd have charged a premium for it. It should have been how the Defender was as standard but accountants rule the show now and have done for many years. My rearstep recently pulled through the bottom of the rear crossmember on the Puma, never happened with the tdi. That's proof if it were ever needed that the quality of components has been dictated by cost rather than engineering integrity. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel 1992 110 200tdi csw -Zikali 2008 110 2.4 tdci csw-Zulu 2011 110 2.4 tdci csw-Masai |

But it didn't... Think assembly quality back in 2008 when mine was made was better than in more recent years.
I think that is a general Land Rover problem, very few people here keep their FFRR, Disco's, and other models after the 6 years max extended warranty period expires. There remain still at least 8 unsold brand new Autobiography's for sale here in Switzerland without takers. Bad speculation.
At the time, in the entire Geneva Canton, they only sold one Autobiography, to a Middle East person living here. And that while money in general is not a problem here. Same time, my Geneva dealer alone sold here about 30 Heritages and 10 Adventure editions. Eric You never actually own a Defender. So, in English Pounds, how much are those unsold Autobiographies?

You think build quality was bad in the 2000’s years. For those who can remember the build quality when ‘British Leyland’ ran the show it was absolute sh*t, that is course when they were assembling, most of the time they were on strike. Plus any part that would fit from another Leyland model, van car, etc was shoved onto the Defender. In fact Land Rovers under British Leyland were half Land Rover and half Sherpa van. For those who like Welsh Mountains and narrow boats have a look at my videos and photos at..

Its all about cost cutting and pushing as much out as possible now. You want to hear some of the stories about Nissan cars on how they are put together! The company I work for make Nissan parts, and I tell you what they have had to change their ways on things, large scrap and quality has been a major issue in 2015/2016. Rather than just let things go threw and let run lines with tools etc. They are now really jumping on stuff making sure things are right, The company lost 7 million last year due to it all.
