Bit of a follow up to my post last week at the bottom of the last page where I started the task of replacing my front diff.
Well by the Tuesday afternoon it was blindingly clear that I was stuffed, the diff was not coming out, it was going to be a complete axle off job. Wednesday was a short day with other things to do but I got the axle off and another hour of rolling the whole axle around the driveway I eventually managed to get the broken diff out. Cleaned out the tube and casing, fitted the replacement diff and got the axle tube fitted back on the motor by which time the school runs were due in the borrowed motor. My neighbour had loaned me his '65 plate Ford Ranger which was fast encouraging me to get mine back on the road! Thursday morning was rebuilding the rest of the motor, hubs and halfshafts back on, trackrod ends, brakes etc, etc. Fill up with oil and give it a try. It seems to be all fine, no leaks, no unecessary noises or vibrations so I'm happy. I've driven around 400 miles since it was fitted, few hours on a pay and play site yesterday and it's been faultless so sorted. When I eventually got it out I could see what had happened, the pin had snapped but around threequarters of its length which meant it still supported the two planetary gears in place, The shorter piece I think dropped out and fouled the entire assembly knocking the rest out causing the lock up in the middle of rush hour in Hereford. I was worried that I had snapped one or both halfshafts but as those planetary gears had dropped out as well, they had nothing to bite against. Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge With the motor being immobile last Thursday the MoT was moved to tomorrow, so off we go in the morning. Last edited by JWL on 19th Dec 2016 9:52pm. This is exactly the same failure as happened to my '07 110 TDCi front diff, but fortunately I didn't have problems getting the diff out of the axle. In my case it was the diff that locked (leaving me with virtually no ability to steer) rather than the crownwheel/pinion. It's easy to see why the 2-gear diff was dropped from the 110 and 130 models eventually. |
