Personally I am of the opinion that all state funding of education should cease with a commensurate drop in personal tax. Why? Twofold answer. First I am a product of the state system but it failed me, I have a very high IQ but because of the one size fits none philosophy of state run education I slipped through the gaps, Essentially school was too easy so I coasted because I was never challenged and consequently my grades in no way reflect my ability. Fortunately I managed to excel in a vocational training environment enough to make a living once I entered real life.
I am certain that in a private sector school I would have been recognised as intelligent and pushed to get the most from myself. However because my parents are a bit too leftwing they couldn't see past their prejudice against private education. Secondly I have chosen not to breed and as such I find it anathema that I have to contribute to the outcome of other people's choices that I didn't make via a system that failed me as a child in the 1980s and has not improved to the present day, and will continue to fail other people's children that I have no interest in funding. If the state system was however actually producing generation after generation of increasingly well educated, intelligent, responsible and socially adept young adults then I would feel much happier with my taxes being used to contribute to that but it doesn't. It is broken and needs to be replaced. Rhubarb and custard let fly with their secret weapon. |

Lambert, don't be too harsh on your parents for not sending you into private education. My parents thought it right to send me to private school and in doing so forfeited new cars and holidays. I hated it, every minute of it. I wasn't particularly bright at school, short and ginger which meant no end of bullying. Looking back I would have preferred to go on holidays and disappear into a large class of 30+ kids.
I've ended up being a building contractor and I'm the only one on site with a private education. I would have preferred to see the full spectrum of society whilst at school which would have prepared me better for my working environment today. Private schooling isn't for everyone. I'm not against it but it didn't suit me. |

I have just spent 3 hours putting up a number of strings of outside lights because S.H.M.B.O. wanted them up this weekend. I checked every light on all strings to ensure they were working, all okay, gutter hooks fitted, put them all in place. Switch on and half the bulbs in two string do not work. . I told S.H.M.B.O. the last time were in B&Q that we should buy some as replacements, Oh no we have enough and they worked last year so we don't bother. Now its my fault that we don't have any replacements and S.H.M.B.O. has decided that she wants to bake rather that go out for some replacements and no I cannot go out myself as I will get the wrong ones. Its only three strings of lights.
That's it I have had enough of Christmas already, she can shove the tree and everything else its cancelled this year. Don't make old people mad. We don't like being old in the first place, so it doesn't take much to us off. Richard |

Local authority run rubbish tip/ recycling centres!
I went to my new tip today, due to a house move, simple enough you would think? I pull up at the brand new all singing all dancing expensively built "waste facility" I sneak under the 2mtr height restriction with the 90 and small trailer brimming with house hold rubbish and a few bits of scrap, Only to be told " sorry we can't take general waste, only metal, glass, (jars and bottles only) And soil!! "Please tell me your joking right?" No sir, you should have read the web site details. But your a state of the art waste facility? Yes, but no general house hold rubbish, we don't hold the appropriate licenses. So you will be taking most of it back with you. Why don't you use our other site, they have the facility's you need. But that's 10 miles further out of my way. Not my problem sir, should have read the web site. No wonder you have a rising fly tipping problem in this area, as reported in the local papers every week, That has nothing to do with us sir, just irrisponsibe people?? So back in the Defender, drive another half hour through the Christmas traffic. To a VERY busy tip, to find bins overflowing with rubbish, and the operatives telling people to "just chuck it in any bin mate, we've not got time to sort it!" It amazes me how these places work sometimes?? Karma was restored as a volvo driver pulls up next to me and says "Nice Land Rover mate, I want one but the missus says we don't need one" We then have a quick chat about how great they are, and tried to persuade them to get one. This calmed me down no end, and I was able to drive away happy, minus my rubbish. 80" 80" 86" 88" 90" Wanted, Forward Control Anything considered. |

It just amazes me, why build a new waste centre that dosent take waste??
Recently the whole county (Berkshire) were issued permits, so neighbouring counties (Hampshire) couldn't use Berkshires facility's, the council reported "this will stop fly tipping in the area" Well I've seen more and more dumped in gateways than ever before! Do the local authorities not see this, or am I missing something? Who are these people??? 80" 80" 86" 88" 90" Wanted, Forward Control Anything considered. |

Same here, our local council now requires registration and we are only aloud 12 trips to the tip per year with a trailer so fly tipping is on the rise the thing is, the council then have to spend more paying someone to go pick up this rubbish and then dispose of it so it can only cost more to the council in the end not only that but they've taken away things like being able to get rid of soil/rubble etc. It just seems like real short sightedness to me and is really annoying as we are delivering and sorting the rubbish for them Ray My build thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic17615.html |
