MOT failed for no CAT
OK,

So after 5 years of MOT's today they decided to fail it for not having a CAT. I always thought it had one anyway as the front section had the shape, but apparently this has been cored out!!

Any suggestions on the best options?

Either install one or take it elsewhere?

Actually, I'm not sure that the latter would work with the new computerised MOT system Confused Darren

How would they know a cat had been cored out unless they removed it, which they aren't allowed to do. Ray

Would it have had one originally? I cant remember when Cats were introduced. Someone must have a front pipe with a cat that you can 'hire' for a day or two. 130's have feeling's as well you know Smile

Andrew,

I'm not sure, I've never touched the exhaust since I owned it. It always had the front down section with what I though was a functioning cat from the day I bought it. I know the rest is missing, middle box and back box but never that! 2006 Defender Double Cab- Zambezi Silver

I think it was 2001/2002 when cats started to be fitted. I'd be taking it up with the garage boss if that's all it failed on as they can't prove its been cored Ray

My 2001 TD5 has one and unfortunately I have just bought a de cat pipe intending to fit when possible, just MOTd it and its fine but wanted to put the new pipe on and get it a bit worn looking before next years test. Hope this is not part of some new purge the government seem to be in a knee jerk situation re city emissions, I think we can expect the usual government solution to everything of let me get my hand in your pocket.

Re hire or borrowing one, It is a pain to fit them makes me wonder if I would want to do it twice. Ray

^^ A little harsh perhaps since it should have a cat, and it should fail the MOT is if it doesn't. They are actually just doing what they should be doing.

Cats were fitted to TD5s from 2001/2002, it may have been the 2002 model year. I think it coincided with the 15P engine and the EGR cooler, but I may be wrong on that.

The most interesting point from this is how the tester established that the Cat was absent, bored out, or simply not working. I wasn't aware that this showed up on the standard emissions test and as far as I know it hasn't in the past, so has the test equipment and test changed? If so it is a rather alarming development because there must be many de-catted vehicle which will be picked up.

Indeed, it would be very interesting to find out exactly how they established that it had a dummy cat. My understanding was that it was a visual inspection only, therefore if a cat appears to be present it will pass. Maybe things have changed? 2005 Td5 | 90 Station Wagon | Tonga Green

It is quite easy to tell if a CAT has been hollowed out by just tapping it with the allowable MOT testing tools.

The MOT manual states:
Quote:
On spark ignition engine vehicles that qualify for a full catalyst emissions test and all compression ignition vehicles check the presence of catalytic converter(s) and particulate filter(s).

and the reason for failure:
Quote:
A catalytic converter or particulate filter missing where one was fitted as standard

It does not actually mention condition of the cat being a reason for failure unless it is the source of a leak.

I would question it personally or just take it elsewhere. Has the same garage passed it in previous years?

I believe there are new emissions testing machines being installed at some MOT stations... Its a limited roll out to test I think... Could be the tip of the iceberg?

If the middle & back box are missing, can they tell from the turbo pulse noise that the cat is missing??

Or does he have one of these

And if he does is he allowed to use it on an MOT test?
