I think all has gone quiet, because no-one really knows any FACTS, and people are tired of hearing/reading "myth & hearsay".

It's possible that all those previously interested have committed suicide on seeing one to many pictures of the DC100 in the press or on forums. V8 90...WIP

I still find it amazing that LR have moved the Disco up market, delayed the the replacement Defender. Thus creating a huge gap in their vehicle line up. 130's have feeling's as well you know

The fact that there isn't a utility version of the D5 does suggest they are allowing for a bigger space for a new Defender to move in to. Secondly, the recently shown (and excellently designed) Jaguar i - Pace concept shows us how good JLR currently is at keeping a secret. 1998 Tdi 90 SW,

I wonder if they'll eventually get round to replacing the Defender with a sole wheelbase length, that would standardise the build process, as alledgedly there's a lot of testing being done with a white P38.
When you look at the market there does not seem to be any manufacturer offering different wheelbases  |

Im shooting off the hip here a bit.
On one of the current production lines in Solihull they are building the RRS, FFRR, LWBFFRR and D5 all of which have different wheelbases and bodies. So a replacement Defender with 3 wheelbase options shouldn't be an issue. 130's have feeling's as well you know |

Had an invite from my local dealer to preview the D5. Being an exiled Yorkshireman I couldn't forego a free vol au vent and a rubber neck at the new D5. They had one top of the range D5 in their showroom (left hand drive so we can guess that they don't have many kicking around as yet). It had white leather upholstery and nearly as much chrome as a Merc inside. It's definitely a move up as far as luxury is concerned when compared with the D3/4. You certainly wouldn't want to be putting your Labs and Springers in the back nor your muddy Le Chameau's in the footwell. As for an injured ewe or new born lamb then forget it.
It struck me as being aimed well and truly at the buyer who aspired to a FFRR but couldn't quite afford its price tag. It looked and felt equally as luxurious and as well equipped as its more expensive stable mate. Let's wait and see where the new Defender pitches into the market. Personally I would like all the D5's technology so I could play off road and switch it on or off as I pleased but with a more basic and practical interior. I think LR are just quietly letting it die.
They don't care about the utility market or those who currently have defenders. They just want posh land barges they can pimp out in lots of leather. Don't like it? Buy a Jap pickup. It seems to me like the D5 has just become direct rival for the Range Rover Sport. As said above, the car for folk who lust after a FFRR but can't quite muster the cash. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

Shaggy, your point 2 there, I fully agree with you. Your point 1, not so sure about that, because most major car manufaturers have a larger models line up than LR/RR currently do. With most of their models now in the premium segment, they probably could make good use of having an extra entry model. But, and I have said this many times here, I just hope that they will shelve the Defender name, and call it something else, or even just Land Rover again. Any new model will be a modern Eurobox structure, won't have much, if anything, to do with what the Defender and its preceeding Land Rover models stand for, i.e. a real meccano of a easily recognizable shape. The Defender name is now turning into a legend I think, and the brand's current and future model line up of luxury Euroboxes are reaping the benefits of that name. If they call a future entry model again Defender, which is going to be most certainly such a modern robotic efficient assembled Eurobox, the legend and aura of that name may suffer which probably won't do the brand any good in general. I do hope that they will launch a new lower segment truck, but don't call it Defender please. Just my 5 Swiss francs.... Eric You never actually own a Defender. I agree, they are probably going to try and tenuously link the name to the brand which in turn will destroy the name. The problem is they desperately need the Land Rover Heratage to give them any sort of creditability as off roaders. Everyone knows that a FFRR is probably better off road in the hands of a 10 year old or 26yr old mum on the way back from the stables, than a Defender. But, which would you confidently take off road? If you bottom out in a Defender, it will probably be damaged, but not too bad. Do it in a FFRR, it will probably be a write-off. Which is why people bought the Defender. However now it is gone, they have reverted back to saying "hey guys, we invented the off roader, remember how good and solid our vehicles were? yeah? well now they can do just as much! (but not really because its too expensive to take off road....) It just doesn't feel like they are being genuine. In 2007 when the new Defender engine was announced they did a fantastic shot of it pulling a ship into doc stating "New engine, More Power". They didn't have to rely on the fact that in the 50's they made a vehicle which would evolve into the Defender. These days its like they are making almost as much noise about there old vehicles which have been out of production for years than the ones they are making now.
