TD5 at motorway speed

I have noticed that when my TD5 gets to what I’m guessing is about 2300 rpm or 65mph with 1.22 transfer box it seems to get significantly louder under acceleration like a resonance in the engine. Below this speed it is lovely and over about 75mph it’s fine again but 65-75 is about the range I prefer to drive at on the Motorway. Maybe this is just a general trait of the TD5? I wondered if it was just running out of puff but it has a stage 2 tune and pulls pretty well and also wouldn’t explain why the noise disappears as it goes faster.

Mine too is most comfortable up to about 63, then up to 70mph it doesn't sound happy and over 70 it is fine again.

No roof rack. Sounds like a case of TADTS

Mine struggles due to the roof rack. A disco transferbox may help out

No problems with mine (Ninety)
I get a little drumming between 65-70 but noting much.
On French motorways it will cruise at 80+ quite happily.

Mine is a bit noisy at speed but I don't think I can blame that on the td5 engine.

Mine behaves exactly the same, ok below 65, noisy above and then quieter above 75 although I rarely do this.

I had the same drumming/droning noise at 65mph on my TD5 110 CSW. It cleared at 70 mph.

It's a 2005 model with 82,000 miles.

I replaced the exhaust system and the noise is no longer there.
l fitted a Britpart centre box and rear section, but the rear section was a poor fit and l ended up with an OE rear section.

The old exhaust looked OK so l'm guessing the internal baffles were shot?

Yep, same

On my 110 Td5

60 = Fine

60 to 70 noisy and harsh and vibrates

70+ = Fine

Same thing on three different sets of wheels

Try replacing the exhaust system!

You can do it yourself (jack up the rear wheel to get the rear section out) and the parts cost less than £100.

The tailpipe on two aftermarket rear sections l tried was very close to the rear crossmember.

I just fitted an OE one but you could probably adjust it by bending the rear mounting a little.

You could be on to something... I wouldn't be surprised if after 120000 miles and 12 years the exhaust is not in the greatest shape.

I have the transfer case conversion and still find that 65 is the comfortable motorway cruising speed. It's also relaxing for me as it's faster than the trucks and slower than the cars compel the outside lane

Lets not forget how sound is just vibrating air. My theory is the frequency of the sound created at ~70 penetrates perfectly into the cab, after ~75 the frequency is too high.

I'm unsure how well this will hold up in court
