Noise diagnosis please

Yes I know....

Background: 2000 Td5 with 93k and thorough service history.

Frustrating engine noise that is rather intermittent.

When engine running (usually warm) and in gear (often with light load of power) get a metallic whine that increases as engine speed increases. Stops when out of gear and under load (up hill for example).

I first thought it was stone stuck in brake area, but seems to stop when no gear selected (coasting own hill for example).

Ideas?

Turbo bearing? Easy to check if the impeller is loose. Take off the hose and wiggle it up down in and out. Should be none. 2010 Range Rover MkIII Autobiography Super Charged (Idris)

There will be a small amount of side to side play in the turbo impeller, as the bearing runs on a film of oil.
But there should be no in/out play and the turbine blades should not touch the housing when you test it with the engine not running.

Thanks, will try and find turbo and the housing you mention:-O and give it a wiggle.

I had a rattling noise off which I thought came somewhere from the front, but it happened to be the exhaust touching the fuel tank support. I found this when my 90 was very dirty and I wondered why that small piece off the exhaust was clean. I fixed it by chaging the exhaust support a little. I was supprised that the rattling noise was gone too. Roel

@ plumpmoose, When you say "whine", would you say a whistle noise, as in very high pitched, in that case I'd say it's very likely to be turbo related, it could just be something as simple as a split turbo hose or loose clamp, or possibly a slight exhaust leak.

Try changing the gearbox and transfer case oils.
Many "services" never touch these items. And check the oil level in the diffs. My 110 had hardly any oil in the rear diff and it came with a full service history.
The rear diff seal often weeps oil and the level drops over time.

Not high high pitched, but not low either. Noise volume rises and falls with engine revs. Completely stops when out of gear and rolling (with and without engine revs).

Will investigate turbo bearing and other suggestions.

found my problem (wine in tune with engine revs inside the landy it sounded like it was coming from transmition/diffs very loud ) on lifting the bonnet and having someone reving the engine it was clearly coming from the front right did screwdriver check and the top right idler pulley was rumberling so much so that the screwdriver was vibrating about after taking the serpantine belt off the noise disappeared any way removed said pulley would not spin at all removed bearing cheeper than replaceing all the lot noise gone
