Do you think this should fail an MOT?
Yes, it's not acceptable as normal wear and tear for a LR MTR tyre.

No, MOT tester is being overly picky and would easily constitute as a minor surface knick with normal use on an MTR.

Roughly correct is good enough for headlight alignment, we're not talking precision science here. The MOT just checks they fall within the relevant tolerance band for the height of the lamp.

I set them straight against a wall, then go for a drive. If they need tweaking (based on observation of the beam cut-off height compared to the windscreens of oncoming vehicles) then I pull over and adjust. Repeat as necessary.

The headlamp aim requirements changed this year, the lower aim limit has been lowered (to reduce the failure rate Confused )

^^ This is what I'm talking about with accuracy, I can't see how you can get them right without the proper equipment.
And to be honest I can't see the point in messing with it for the cost to get it sorted.

To my mind it's getting ridiculously complicated.

What next, headlight too square or too round.

If he has adjusted them to spec, I don't like it.
There are dark areas in front that we're not there before on dipped.
Not super severe but enough for you to miss something, particularly on undulating roads.

I'm not overly worried but it is quite annoying. Play Stupid Games, Win Stupid Prizes.

I set mine against a brick wall. Start close to the wall and set them the same height, then check the horizontal cut-off drops about 1 brick every 15 feet or so as you pull back. Not perfect but it's not let me down yet.

You can get them right without the proper equipment, okay maybe not inch-perfect but you can get them so they are as high as possible without dazzling people - which is more important than whether it passes the MOT or not.

There are an awful lot of people that fail the "not dazzling" requirement round here :/
And the people that drive around with foglights on whatever the weather.

I've always set mine the way I was taught to do it on my motorbike nearly 40 years ago. Never had an issue with failing an MOT on headlight adjustment.

It's simply a case of adjusting the high beam so that the centre of the beam is at the same height as the centre of the headlight. Pull the vehicle up to a wall or garage door, mark the centres of the lights on the wall/door, back up 20 feet and adjust the lights on high beam until they are both aligned with the marks. Dipped beam will always cut off below the high beam centre if the lights are properly designed and have the correct bulbs in them. The MOT test equipment essentially does the same thing as this test. http://www.yorkshireoffroadclub.net/

My thoughts exactly Steve.
I know their intention was that they hoped I wouldn't bother with having the car by making it a hassle.
When I said I'd go back home and get it their faces dropped.
Last year I didn't have the same issues or NI number idea, I've hired a Transite for a week before using only my clean licence and licence number,
Not NI numbers.
Sadly, I can't remember mine off the top of my head so needed the card.
Last years courtesy had so little fuel in it I could hardly get it to the nearest petrol station safely, iirc has 7miles in it on the display but was obviously running on fumes. Rolling Eyes
I honestly think typical places like Halfords would do better and if they had their act together and dint take all day I wouldn't even need a courtesy. Play Stupid Games, Win Stupid Prizes.

I would be very careful giving that information to anyone, trouble is they may "need it" for proof of I'd but how do you know that information is safe ... identity theft comes to mind ... or am I being paranoid?

Now paper licence counterparts don't 'exist' they need your NI number to request info about endorsements on your licence. (For the hire car).if you don't want to hand over the number, you can go on the dvla website and get the reference code yourself and give them that.

Sure sidewall damage should be picked up because most people wouldn't check their tyres (I'm not 100% some people could even point out which bit of the car the tyres are!) but failing it on that is crazy, that 'damage' is so minor.

Well, one year on I changed away and over to Halfords just for MOT's anyway.
I've just came back, clean sheet no advisories no nothing.

The guys there were quick, courteous, and bang on time as was I.

No attitude, waiting around or judgemental attitude.

Booked for 1:50pm I was there at 1:45, all paper work ready to go. Hand over job done and it was in the bay @ 1:50.

Went around the shops for a bit, got back at 2:40 and in 5 mins even earlier than an hour was done and off I went.
Even paid in advance by PayPal too so no fussing with that.

£29.99 compared to £42 previously. All in definitely recommend.

Incorrect. It's a common myth, the spare isn't tested at all. At worst all the tester can do is give an advisory that it's in poor condition. But it's not and never has been a reason for failure.
