Do you think this should fail an MOT?
Yes, it's not acceptable as normal wear and tear for a LR MTR tyre.

No, MOT tester is being overly picky and would easily constitute as a minor surface knick with normal use on an MTR.

^^ This is what I'm talking about with accuracy, I can't see how you can get them right without the proper equipment.
And to be honest I can't see the point in messing with it for the cost to get it sorted.

To my mind it's getting ridiculously complicated.

What next, headlight too square or too round.

If he has adjusted them to spec, I don't like it.
There are dark areas in front that we're not there before on dipped.
Not super severe but enough for you to miss something, particularly on undulating roads.

I'm not overly worried but it is quite annoying.

You can draw the markings on a wall with chalk and adjust them that way. Although when i fitted new head lamp units (to replace leaking and UV damaged ones) on my mums Citroen i just took it to Kwikfit and they adjusted them for beer tokens.

True.
Funny thing this year is, went to LR last year for my Noldens to be adjusted.
(After last MOT - immediately after fitting Noldens.)
In this MOT the tester chose to bring them up slightly, apparently he thought they were a little low.

They weren't anything to do with the MOT in an advisory form or anything like that at all.

Very odd, even I thought they were a little low after LR done them.

LR charged next to nothing to do it, so I'm not complaining but the tester this year didn't even mention it but on the papers he put down 'headlight aim a little low, adjusted up slightly'. Or similar wording.

Anyway, great guys - and I think but could be wrong he adjusted my LED light bar ever so slightly for aim too which is great.

Some different to the major issues I had last year.
I honestly think it was down to some sworded marque jealousy or something silly like that last year.

My last MOT they decided they felt the need to screw the headlamps all the way in on the adjusters, and in doing so managed to break the mounting tabs off one of the bulbs (I had no idea that was even possible) so the bulb was dangling rather uselessly in the housing.

If you do swap with the spare don't put the failed wheel on as a spare. You don't need a spare legally but if you do it must pass.

Incorrect. It's a common myth, the spare isn't tested at all. At worst all the tester can do is give an advisory that it's in poor condition. But it's not and never has been a reason for failure.

I have heard this myth a few times too. The MOT manual states:
"This inspection applies to tyres fitted to the road wheels only. The vehicle presenter should be
informed when it is noticed that there is a defective tyre on a spare wheel."

Therefore an advisory may be issued but not a failure for spare tyre defect. I can almost guarantee that any Peugeot or Citroen over 10years old will have a completely perished and flat spare tyre hanging beneath the boot floor that the owner probably doesn't even know exists or how to remove it. 02' 110 TD5 Double Cab Rebuild Thread

It'll never be more than an advisory, otherwise what happens if you take a van for an MOT with 3 or 4 bald tyres in the back.

I suspect it might originate from fast fit tyre places who do MOT's. When the car turns up before it actually get's tested, They probably check the spare and 'strongly recommend' to the car's owner that they replace the spare tyre as it "would be illegal if they used it". This then gives the impression to the car's owner that it'll fail the MOT if the spare tyre isn't servicable, without the test station actually failing it. Wink

dealer mots are the worst for failing cars! the Peugeot tester who tested my 306 fiddled with the number plate electrics so that they wouldn't go on, and tried to fail it, a long with a few other things. I had a few words with the mot tester the next day about his failures. I mentioned about the electrics side of things that he had played with, and said he would pass, I said its going else where, and guess what it passed no problems!
So they do try to get the business in, they did try and charge me well over 100 quid to balance none centre wheels too! I said you can shove that up your arse!
For your tyre steve, I don't think even most testers would have even clocked that at all, if they did they would have just warned you on it. But then again could the MOT tester have done it? who knows, Whistle
If it was a massive chunk then yeah, but then again you are not daft enough to drive a car with a massive chunk out of the tyre you, like a former work mate of mine did. His was right down to the inner wall practically and on the verge of a blow out. I told him to change the wheel over for the spare while in for the service at the main dealer. But he was too far up his posh arse to listen to me and my pal. All we got out of him was the car would look Censored for having a steel wheel on! I said who cares as long as its safe! Renault did pick up on it at the service and said change that over straight away for the spare as that's on the verge of going bang at 70 mph! He did end up changing the tyre over, but I think he just got the spare tyre swopped on. Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back

All turned out for the best in the end as I'm running 255/85's now and not 235's. The 285's are even nicer.

I went for a set of 5, but the cost. Shocked at least they should be good for a good few years anyway.

When I had a brand new spare on at the time last year what on earth was wrong with that?
They were adamant I would get two new rear tyre's, which I wasn't goin to do anyway as I was thinking then to go a larger size.
I was not going to buy a pair of 235's at the time, to suit them nor could I get them sorted locally to then 6 months lasted buy a 255/85 set.

Cannot fault D44 for supply and fit and price too, local places wouldn't even fit....

It was cheaper for me to do a 120 mile round trip and still save. Rolling with laughter Play Stupid Games, Win Stupid Prizes.

That is a little naughty, cuts should only be checked with a blunt instrument, i use a blunt screwdriver and only fail if cords can be felt.

Personally I would had taken it further, as the tester is not giving a fair test and probably needed to fail some to get his percentage pass rate down.
