Good day out on Friday at Hopton Court. I took my little red pick up as I had the dogs with me. For a commercial shoot they were great about a gun bringing a dog. Low sun and no wind made it a challenge for the keepers but they presented some decent birds, a mix of partridge, pheasant and duck. One of the guns I hadn't met before let out he has a 50th anniversary, an early Simon Durrant resto. I say early because the owner said it is now in need of another tidy up!

Glad to hear it! It is quite funny with commercial shoots these days almost as if your not allowed to bring a dog if your shooting. Just leave it to the pickers up, but there is nothing better than having your own dog retrieve a few birds you've shot!
Seems mad really. I shot on Saturday the first shoot of a little shoot myself and 2 friends set up on a friends farm. We put down 300 ex layers as a bit of a test run this season to use it for dog training. We thought it was about time to give it a go, so we bought a friend each along to bulk the numbers out a bit. We had a great time and ended up with 16 pheasants, 2 pigeons and a crow. I thought we'd only shoot about 5 or 6 but the birds held well and lot weren't shot as they weren't getting up. We drove around in my 90 and my friends brand new 90 pick up had the dogs in the back in his custom dog box. All in all a fun day out and a bit of practice for this weekends driven day. I will try and get a picture of Ross's pick up, he's had a 6inch cab extension done to create some more room in the cab, tail gate changed to a swing open to stop the dogs toe's getting trapped. A full roll size cage put on and a platform over the roof for a leaning on with a rifle. He's talking about some sort swivel chair contraption to go in as well! Number of other accessories, mantec wheel carrier, winch bumper and winch, LEDS, bash plate, Corbeau seats, LED's, Snorkel, 18inch boosts, KO2 tyres the list is endless Straight from the dealer into a local garage to have all that put on, know's what he likes! We were only using 20 bores, not sure if allowed to post this with 'sleeping' pheasants in? Click image to enlarge |

Quite a few shooting friends have gone down the 20g route and struggled for a season or two, but when they are on form its great to see. I need to get a lot betrer with a 12g before going up the scale.

I do find the tighter pattern of the 20bore leads to either a clean kill or a miss, rather then ending up with runners/wounded birds. I do normally shoot with a 12g on driven days but as this was a walked up/mini driven style of shooting we all opted for the smaller gauge. Also a 20g is brilliant for walking due to its lightweight and points beautifully!

I shot my best ever pheasant with my 28g EELL. 11 shots at it from guns to my left and it's head folded with my first shot.
But my favourite is.. Browning C2/20g Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge 2008 RS4 gone, 123d M Sport, and a Puma 90 XS.. Last edited by RED-DOT on 14th Nov 2016 9:01pm. Edited 1 time in total |

I wish I could but I'm firmly stuck in shot corner! There are a couple of guns at home who are consistently able to pick out the best and always seem to manage head shots. Both shoot maintained lead and 20g and both have been shooting for 20+ years. It is great to see it done.
