Problems!!!!
Hello all, I am after some advice. My partners 54 plate TD5 has suddenly lost power, in all gears foot to the floor the truck is acting like it's against a limiter, in the dark it looks like it's smoking. Marginal water loss, possible system pressure as it looks like coolant has pressurised out of the header. Oil looks ok. I think I can hear an engine bay ticking that I don't notice from before. Turbo is spooling up, new maf recently and I do need to do a warped exhaust manifold at some point, but this is only a minor front stud blow, all studs still intact. Any thoughts really appreciated.

To help diagnose(which is hard when it can't been seen or heard)a little more information may help.
Has the idle changed?
Does it rev OK when stationery?
If the throttle is used gently can it get road speed OK?
Has it had an over heating incident?
Any recent mechanical work done to it?

A common issue is for a intercooler hose to delaminate internally restricting airflow when under load.
Loss of power and black smoke are the usual symptoms.
I had one hose develop a crack so it lost boost pressure with the foot down hard, wouldn't pull and eventually blew smoke as it got worse.

Cheers Kyle. Cheers,
Kyle.

I would start off by unplugging the MAF and see if that makes a difference.

Is the engine warning light coming on ? (If so it could be going into limp home mode)

Have you checked all the pipework, especially intercooler pipes, are secure ? (I've had intercooler pipes pop off before and that turns it into a very poor normally aspirated engine.)

Is it a rev limit where it's running out of power as revs increase or is it road speed related ? (There's a hard limit that cost in at a set road speed if you're in low box, or the ECU thinks you are). http://www.yorkshireoffroadclub.net/

Yes it is as if it has rev limit, it can get to speed, just.

Unplugged the maf and no difference.

Checked all pipe work which is all silicone updated

No engine warning light.

Have you checked the air intake and filter?
As it's had a new MAF maybe a rag was left in the airbox? Cheers,
Kyle.

Yup, air intake, filter and induction pipework is all good. I am thinking as it's had a new injector loom as well it's a head gasket?

Have you pulled the red plug on the ecu to check for oil, I had a similar issue on a 53 plate and needed a new injector harness, all sorted after that

Map sensor on the inlet, I had the same symptoms on my disco when I swapped heads, changed to old sensor and it went like a stabbed rat again. Temp gauge ok?

Have you checked the EGR valve?

I had similar problems with mine, and the EGR valve was completely clogged up. I replaced it with a blanking kit, and been fine since Thumbs Up '99 TD5 Defender 90
