Speedo Mileage Display

The mileage clock failure on the speedo is a common failure for the Defender. First it flickered sometimes, but would display and eventually it started to just go blank randomly, until it finally lost the plot. It started to become a more permanent failure so I decided to get it fixed.

I sent it away for repair at Cluster Repairs UK (http://www.clusterrepairsuk.co.uk/). A week later and £119 lighter...it is back fully refurbished and with 1 year warranty for work carried out. Refitted and all working perfectly with the correct mileage retained. Highly recommend the service. ex-MY1998 Defender 50th GB343 5.0L JE Supersports

New Manifolds, S/S Exhaust, Chip

A bit quiet on the updates, but finally some action...

Collected GB343 from RPI after having the manifolds, s/s exhaust and chip fitted. Wow. It's like night and day.

The response is instant now and mid range, very noticeable on the motorway coming back. The power is all the way through and keeps pulling. Turns out mine still had the 4L chip, so replacing with the correct 5L mapping has released what it should've been all along. Drives like a new car now, and sounds great too!

A big thanks to Ian and team at RPI. Fantastic job and well worth it. Attached some pictures RPI took after it was fitted (taken from their FB page - thanks Ian)

Cold Start High Idle : Resolved

Issue now resolved. Thermostat was jammed open. Now replaced with a 74.

Also most probably helps the mapping is now updated. However, it wasn't an issue before and became intermittent, until it finally happened at every cold start up. Seems most likely that the thermostat was the issue - coolant temp sensor and stepper had already been replaced.

The next plan moves to suspension...I would like to upgrade the shocks and springs. The options seem endless, so will keep looking into that for next year. Currently thinking the B6 and Eibach combo. Any recommendations, feel free to comment. ex-MY1998 Defender 50th GB343 5.0L JE Supersports

Looks great! Is that their custom made SS system and the headers the Headman ones? Be interested to know ho much the exhaust element was (you can pm me?) - Hoping to get mine done next year. Mark Adfams chipped mine about 8 years ago - full rolling road set up. In the body shop at present for a complete makeover Smile Cheers

Hi Simon,

Yes, it's the custom SS system with cats and Hedman Hedders manifolds, they can supply both. Also required the slim line knock sensors. The exhaust alone is 975+vat. The tailpipe looks great. The whole system gives a deep rumble.

I must admit, mine needs some paint work attention (rear arch and roof alpine panel), so that's also something I am planning - I am supposed to call Simon Durant for a chat about that, but ended up doing all this stuff first. It's running so good now I kind of want to get it refreshed even sooner. Working down the list! Ha ex-MY1998 Defender 50th GB343 5.0L JE Supersports

Hi Aaron,
Max at Avalanche is doing mine does some lovely work (used to be Greenholme Garage) he trained there and now he owns it - www.avalancheeditions.com. Simon's work is great but a bit far for me as I'm in North Yorkshire - Max is near me. John at Jake Wrights has just done a big service and check over thankfully all ok, but I do need 2 new doors Big Cry. I'll see in the next 2 weeks if there is anything else once Max strips her down, topless!

Inside stripped out!

Oh wow, probably best not to look at the stripped out pictures..ha. It will be great when it's finished though. I saw one of Simon's recent works of art at the London2Brighton run, and it was amazing. When I've sorted the suspension I think it will be time to bite the bullet. The way values have gone, it's really worth getting it done now.

Look forward to seeing pictures of yours all complete! ex-MY1998 Defender 50th GB343 5.0L JE Supersports
