Do you think this should fail an MOT?
Yes, it's not acceptable as normal wear and tear for a LR MTR tyre.

No, MOT tester is being overly picky and would easily constitute as a minor surface knick with normal use on an MTR.

Tyre and MOT fail.
Well today my 90 went in for it's MOT straight pass but told it failed on one tyre.
A tyre that I cleaned just yesterday and found to my be in my view to be no issue with at all with just normal wear and tear for a 4yr old / 24k BFG KM2 MTR.

This was a Ford main dealer, for now I'll have to fit spare to pass tomorrow.
I've made two trips there today, once I went with my license to pick up courtesy and drop my 90 off.
I was told I need NI number as well which was at home. No one told me!
They also despite me asking for a courtesy said nothing when I arrived and shivvied me away until I said.
'What about the courtesy?'
"Oh, I'll look"

There was in the end, but then I had to go home to get my NI card and then back again....

Fine, swallowed that one and then a few hours later phone call and the tyre is illegal and an MOT fail.
Now I've got to go back again 8AM tomorrow for a third time, as well as changing the wheel over with the spare which luckily is brand new.

So thoughts?
If it is not usable it seems very minor to me to ditch an otherwise very good condition tyre and I'd then need to buy another tyre for the NSR so ive got two new tyre's on the same axle with the same tread depth etc.

Not a happy at all, and I've been very very very busy lately too.

Thoughts and advice welcome.

Thank-you. Thumbs Up

Very small screwdriver, approx 2mm and does not go deep as suggested by them, it's around a 45degree or lesser angle and not straight inwards.
These KM2's also have reinforced sidewalls as standard...

If you poke it around can you feel the cords?
If you can then it can be an issue.

It doesn't look deep enough to me.

I certainly wouldn't have failed it for that.

Well they said they can, I personally can't see it being the case these tyre's are tough!
The way they were talking I thought I had a 2" gash on the inner tyre wall or tread edge. Rolling Eyes Play Stupid Games, Win Stupid Prizes.

Not a fail if no cords visible however you are in the hands of the tester (Probably hates 4x4 and is a common issue)

I would sent it for MOT else where, I really can't see as that's a fail. They're probably trying to eek a bit more doe out of you!

I've had two days wasted for an MOT fail 'cos a carpark permit was within the sweep of the wipers. "Couldn't you have moved it?" "Not our job, Sir, come back tomorrow for a freebie".

They do have a quota of fails/retests they have to maintain!

I would stick the small flap down with super glue and then do what Birt Monroe did to his land speed record bike in the film "The worlds fastest Indian " and cover it up with boot polish.
Maybe swap it over to throw them off a bit. Whistle

That's mad.
We've had the farm one come back with the spare swapped in for one of the wheels because it was dodgy, but they did that rather than having to faff around taking it back.

Some places do seem a bit tricky though, we've had a previous one fail an MOT at a local independent specialist (who have a deservedly interesting reputation) because it had a completely rotten chassis. They offered to change it for us but it passed future tests at a different station absolutely fine because there was nothing wrong with the chassis.

Put the spare on for the MOT, once it has passed put that back and plan to take it somewhere else next year.

If you do swap with the spare don't put the failed wheel on as a spare. You don't need a spare legally but if you do it must pass.

FFS Steve!

This is crazy! Pity that you had not taken your Defender in with the tyres etc muddy, they would never have seen that... in any event I find it astounding that it should fail an MOT for a tiny cut in the rubber!

If I had time I would just now go to my local spit and polish MOT garage... it would be in/out with a pass without all of this hassle for you and you could give the main dealer a big finger. I do think the MOT is a good system that undoubtedly keeps a lot of dodgy vehicles off the road... and with testers who also have commonsense (unlike yours!) this would never have been an issue! YOLO... Tell me about it, straight passes I've had there for about the last 4 years, permanently in fact. (Since new)
New Tester and......

KM2's have a 4ply reinforced sidewall and steel banding written on the sidewall.

Shouldn't have bothered to use some tyre shine.

Thanks for the tip with the spare, I'll leave it off, but nuts on the carrier bolts or the tosser will find a problem with that or something!

I think he's a 4x4 hater as suggested above, I thought that too,
I won't be going back, this after doing so for about 4 or 5 years straight.

Very hacked off as I have many other things to actually be getting on with..

Sorted out this morning, rest assured I said my piece and you guys here gave me a lot more extra detail to use.
So thank-you for that to everyone.

All she kept banging on about was 'oh I don't know, it's the testers job.'

Off road this off road that, I said I'd had a full service done 6 weeks ago at a good place. (Was D44)
And checked everything myself, nothing.

"Oh he uses a probe"

I said yes, and so did I yesterday afternoon right away, and I said it's quad ply reinforced sidewall etc.

I also said I put it online. (Not naming here and 86+% agree it shouldn't be a fail)

Happily for me my mother was with me too so I had extra back up too and two extra customers or three came in at the same time. Whistle

Needless to say, won't be going back and a 1* review for them.

They also kept me waiting, yet again until I said I want it done now I have work to do!

Anyone interested in where this was 'PM' me directly.

Thank-you once again to you all for replying so fast. Play Stupid Games, Win Stupid Prizes.
