Tinkling/rattling sound when taking foot of the gas at 70-60
Hey guys,

Yet another weird noise coming from Arnold. Today I noticed when I take my foot off the gas from 70 to 65-60 there is a weird sound of something tinkering around, like a toolbox when you shake it. Its quite faint and coming from either centre or drivers side.

Any suggestions as to what it could be? I still have the wobbling at 55mph so this is another addition. Didn't notice it at other speeds.

Gearbox? I've had the same thing, noise, decelerating from speed after the box had got properly warm.
Seemed to me that the bearings were rattling. So I ignored it ... on the 2005 truck these last 3 years and 20k miles driving to and from Switzerland in 30C for 12 hr at a time with the whole centre tunnel glowing red hot (more or less Rolling Eyes ) ... and it's still going fine. Drive it. When (if) it stops, fix it Thumbs Up Sold the much modified 110 2.8, in Oz
Brought the 90 home from Switzerland ...

Might not be but check the heat shield by the turbo, they often fracture around the fixing points.

Check the thin metal heat shield on the passenger side gearbox mount. I had what sounds like a similar tinkling sound to what you have described, which happened at certain engine RPMs, and it turned out to be this little metal heatshield which is designed (I assume) to protect the rubber mount from the exhaust temperature. You can easily bend it, so see if its able to rattle against any metal parts.

+1 same noise and cannot identify where it comes from, it only occurs when lifting off the accelerator at 65+ ish mph Defender 90 TD5 County -
You need only two tools in life: WD-40 and duct tape.
If it doesnt move and it should: WD-40.
If it moves and shouldnt: duct tape it.

+1 again for a similar noise when easing off at high speed, only happened a few times though.

Bizarre. 1hour drive today and always at the same speed when taking foot off the pedal.
