^^ That's really handy.

Internal roll cage is a good mounting point too, assuming you can clamp on it without altering it's strength (holes will induce buckling sooner for instance).

Really good to know re. shaking - thanks for the tip Walfy and Litch.

Also, it looks like I've underspecced in terms of capacity, I bought 1Kg but the 4WD club requires at least 2Kg (as most of you seem to have installed). I took a punt, knowing that if I got it wrong it would be no matter as I can put the 1Kg in the house/garage etc. certainly no harm in that.

Off to the safety shop again, I wonder what else I'll come back with this time? (some quality cotton coveralls in black last trip)

You know you're getting old when the safety and workwear shop gets you excited. Laughing Solved the bowel problem, working on the consonants...

I have a safety devices 2.5kg CO2 extinguisher mounted to the rear of the genuine dog guard, which is quickly accessible using the side window or from the back door. Anywhere inside the passenger compartment gets in the way too much in my opinion. Puma cabs are not spacious.

While I applaud all this safety with fire extinguishers but please be aware of the capabilities of each style of extinguisher.

Firstly you have to understand the fire triangle,

Fuel, heat, fuel.

Fuel, Heat, oxygen

Take 1 of these away and the fire dies. But each extinguisher has differing effects on the fire.

Powder, Starves the fire of oxygen. Makes a mess and is very corrosive to the components of your vehicle. Need to fully ventilate the vehicle before reentering. Doesn't remove heat.

Water, heavy and cumbersome, not usually fitted to vehicles. Removes heat.

Foam, heavy and cumbersome, not usually fitted to vehicles, removes heat and oxygen.

Co2, Can cause frostbite if the black trumpet is held whilst discharging, need to evacuate vehicle if discharged inside vehicle if occupants are still inside. Doesn't remove heat.


Please be aware that if you use powder, once the powder has settled the oxygen can re enter the vehicle and the fire can reignite, if the heat is still present.
Same with Co2, once the gas dissipates the fire can reignite.

Most fire extinguishers are not for putting the fire out but to aid escape. Therefore if you have to exit the vehicle to gain access to the extinguishers then I would suggest they are incorrectly positioned.

You can take/heed my advice or not, it's up to you. But all of my extinguishers are easily accessible from the drivers seat.

I have one mounted on the rear bulkhead behind the cubby, and there's another one living near the rear door because I often cook there on the Coleman which is mounted on the door. Eventually I want to mount it on the door too, but at the opening side instead of'the hinges.

Thanks for the heads up about giving them a shake. It was only last Thursday that I saw a BMW suffering from a fire in the engine compartment. It was only the third extinguisher that worked, the first two did nothing!

I have watched the" fire extinguisher guy" when he does his twice yearly inspections on the fleet in work and he spends 2 mins on each extinguisher with a heavy rubber mallet......what a job.....

Our "fire extinguisher guy" just weighs them to check the haven't be discharged, wiggles the pressure gauge and that's about it.

Anybody know anything about theses http://www.firepal.co.uk/ they are coming out of the motorhome sector. Size for size half that of conventional extinguishers and supposedly no issues with settling etc. Strictly single use however.
I bought one at the NEC on cheap offer and they definately have big advantages over normal extinguishers in fitting and usability but the proof is in the use and I am reluctant to commit to having just them at the moment. I will however set this one off late next year when it has been sat around in my wagon for a couple of years.

They then need to be sent back to be refurbed.

The firepal though you cant switch off, you have to exhaust the full charge.
