Your linkages are most likely seized die to lack of use, if they are fully clear of mud and dirt inspect them to ensure they are not snapped (does happen a lot) and they are not loose, if all that is good you can try to select low box, have it in first gear and slowly raise the clutch as you keep a steady pressure on the lever, do not try and force it too hard or you may snap the linkage. 90 wolf - Jasmin http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic39408.html

Thanks will look closer tomorrow. It feels as though the lever is already as far forward as possible but still only in neutral, is it possible that a previous owner has not assembled the linkage properly? The lever is almost touching the gear stick?? Sorry to appear a total idiot by the way!!

Ok, my 1996 90 300tdi isn't the easiest to get into low range. Leaving it in gear I have to take it out of low into 'nothing' then up with the clutch, wait a second or two, down again and then it will go in. I've got a rough idea that isn't text book but it seems to work ok.

are you rolling while trying? i find it much easier to slowly roll forward then slip into low
