Zagato, I'm with you on this one, although to a different degree. If i could ever afford a new Defender (they're double the price in Finland), I'd want one with wind-down windows. I never really felt much need for electric gizmos there. It's not as if winding down manually is particularly difficult! Plus I really hate it that I can't wind a window down without ignition on — plus there's always the risk of being in an accident and then not being able to open the windows.
I'm not particular on ABS either (remember I drive a Caterham 7). We tested this on a simulated icy track in Finland, for our driving tuition, and the quickest way to stop a car is manually. Not by pumping, mind you, but buy gently feathering the brake just before it is about to slip (actually friction is highest at that point). Of course the trouble is in a nasty situation your reflexes might get the better of you and you floor the brakes. The TC is actually nice as it's a proper offroad tuned version, unlike on some cars where you actually have to turn TC off to drive up a snowy hill! However a manual lock would be even better. Summers in Finland are surprisingly hot and sticky, so I think I might appreciate the AC, though. Especially as Land Rover removed the vents |

I am old school (or just old!) and I do have a problem with ABS - whenever it kicks in I instinctively release the brake pedal and reapply just as I would if the brakes had locked up! Old habits die hard!
My County DC doesn't have aircon, ABS or TC because I wanted a more rugged, simple and maintainable vehcicle, and I don't really miss them at all. If I want to haul the engine out, I can do so without having to get the refrigerant drained and refilled afterwards. There are no wheel sensors to fail and trigger warning lights (the only recurring fault I have had on my Disco 2 in 200,000 miles). Plus in snow I can stop quicker than an ABS equipped vehicle. I don't really have an issue with the electric front windows, and at least they stay shut unlike the manual rears (an elastic band from the inside door handle to the winder handle cures the self-opening rears, but it shouldn't be necessary on a £30k car really), but hey it's a Landrover and we love 'em all the same. The only things I would like and will fit when I get round to it are a heated windscreen and heated exterior mirrors (I have a solid canopy and no view through the back). The other thing I would like is a heater which gives out a predictable and stable air temperature, but since there is no such thing for a Defender yet I will settle for one that gives out heat, even if it does make a furnace seem cold by comparison. |

Zagato, if you go for one without A/C you should get the air vents in the bulkhead.

Not so I'm afraid. The bulkhead vents dissapeared with the introduction of the Puma and the new dashboard. John http://www.hampshire4x4response.co.uk 2011 Tdci 110 CSW XS |
