Near the drain hose on the nearest side of the block I believe. No Guts, No Glory.

The thermostat is in the pipework on the left side of the radiator next to the left side head light. Remove the fan shroud to get to it. The second pic is what you are looking for and it is an easier job if you get a pipe clamp removal tool as there is not a lot of space in there. 30 minute job.

It's worth to mention, that there exists only one (water-)thermostat in the Puma. I learned that this week. The workshop-manual and microcat-sources are wrong and refer to Transit-parts. There exists no thermostat in the waterpump-manifold (LR004618). The only water-thermostat is located in the radiator-hose as mentioned. It got partnumer PEM100990K and opens at 82°C. |

There exist three genuine LR thermostats which fit the Puma Defender. All the detail of when they open and their part numbers are in the second thread posted by Lorryman100.
Many on here, including myself, have replaced the standard thermostat by the PEL500110 version, which opens at 82°C while the standard thermostat used in the Puma opens as of 86°C. Contrary to what some have been saying, I see no change in how long it takes for the engine to heat up. I guess the PEL500110 just lets the engine warm up at the same speed as the standard thermostat, only difference being that it starts opening up at 4°C lower already. Which means less risk to reach very high coolant temps, as the water flow through the radiator gets to full speed faster already. I am happy with this PEL500110, my dealer actually admitted that running the engine in mid to higher 80s as opposed to 90s will be perfect, and the main reason why todays cars have thermostats allowing them to run at higher temps seems to be that these higher temps help emissions to remain lower, but those temps are not necessarily better for the engine health itself. One additional benefit of replacing the thermostat is that that is the right time to drain and replace the entire coolant fluid in the system. I put questions by the recommended coolant fluid replacement interval of 200.000KM or 10 years. Coolant fluid has a number of additives, including anticorrosion additives, and I think there is a benefit of replacing this a bit more often than what LR recommend. At 85000KM I already replaced the coolant twice now, last time when the PEL500110 was installed. Eric You never actually own a Defender. Hi!
Replacing the actual thermostat of my 2009 2.4PUMA with the PEL500110 could be the solution for stopping overheating when wheather is particulary hot? Because with my remaped Puma it's frequent. regards |

This has brought back memories of my first car - a Ford Fiesta. Had problems with overheating. A friend helped out checking that the thermostat was wired in correctly.
Still had problems so went to get a new thermostat, Turned out that friend had mistaken the rear light switch for the thermostat. Solution to overheating while in queue of traffic was to put car into reverse! |
