Doing mine this week! Replacing them with some nice after-market ones!
Whilst on the subject of removing the gear sticks, can anyone tell me what is involved in taking off and replacing the H/L smaller stick please? Cheers, Pete YOLO... You Only Live Once... |

Can you share what you're going to put in place of the original gear stick? I did some research on aftermarket options, but all seems to be really expensive. Links are welcome, if you don't mind. Thanks! 2020: Defender 110 SW 300 Tdi 2004 Alpine White

All gears when under load or going up hill between 1000 and 1300 revs.

Ah I see, worse than mine was even then.
Mine used to be around 1800 rpm, so about 50 - 60mph. Either way, no trouble with mine since I completed it myself. |

Doing mine this week as well... glue is drying as we speak!
That rattling noise drives me nuts cruising at 60 mph!!! A great thread solving a really small but annoying problem, thanks!! YOLO... You Only Live Once... |

Sounds like you have gearbox or drivetrain issues when it starts doesn't it.
Particularly embarrassing if you have passengers. |

Update on mine now.
I was lucky enough to find a set of OEM 'Heritage' gear levers (mentioned on here!) that arrived from the UK last week. The 4 lead weights in them were set rock solid in the plastic retainers, but even so I glued them in place as per this thread. Took the 90 to the dealers yesterday, they were more than happy to change the levers over for me FOC as they could hear the rattle coming from the originals! Took a very helpful mechanic just 5 minutes to do the job! Well impressed. The lead weights in my old levers were so loose I was surprised they had not fallen out! Shaking the stick was like shaking a castanet, no wonder there was a racket when driving! WHAT a transformation! SO much quieter and weirdly, my gear shift action is also much improved! The Heritage levers also look so cool! Best mod to date, thanks to his thread! Thanks YOLO... You Only Live Once... |

Excellent, it should reduce vibration as you actually shift gears too hence the better more positive feel.
Small mod but very worthwhile. Glad it made your Defender experience better. |

Small update on this thread, a fair time has surpassed since I've done this.
Two and a half years heading towards 3 years. Still no issues at all, so it certainly is a permanent fix. Why I put up with it for four years prior I do not know. Thought I would bring thins thread up again so some of those here that have recently joined may motive and it might prove useful. ⭐️⭐️God Bless the USA 🇬🇧🇺🇸 ⭐️⭐️ |
