Wales 2012 Defender 90 Other SW Keswick Green
A hard question. If I look at the Defender in my vicinity I would say 100k miles is minimum life expectancy. If I read complaints in the internet I see quite some, the loudest, with a lot less. Wether this difference is the usual statistics, or handling related, I am unable to say. Yes, there were and maybe still are manufacturing issues with some batches. Yes, heavy towing may contribute to it as well (even though I don't see that here, but maybe frequent heavy tower handle the car different, who knows). But, is there enough evidence to state some "general lifetime"? I fear not. Never forget: cars have owner, Landrover have field service personnel.

Rather than risking main dealer labour rates to find out what I already know (that the clutch plate springs are worn) I decided to wait until it actually breaks and then get it fixed by an Indy or trusted local garage. In the long term it will be cheaper than paying for an extended warranty, particularly if the warranty terms mandate LR dealership servicing.

Be a little careful with this strategy since when the springs finally fall out the collateral damage can increase the bill significantly.

When I bought my 2007 DC in 2010 it had 58k on the clock and was on driven plate number 2. I replaced that almost immediately as it was rattling badly, and number 3 lasted to 150k miles. Number 4 is still in and not yet rattling, and the vehicle is now just approaching 200k miles.

I may drop the box soon to check the clutch and the output adaptor shaft splines even though neither is showing signs of problems yet. The infamous shaft coupling is the original, greased thoroughly at 150k miles, at which time it was in better condition than the brand new spare I bought just in case.

It's a shame there isn't someone nearby with hands-on experience of dropping the box (other than the LR dealership) because I would always opt for some preventative maintenance over sitting on the side of the road. I am going to get it serviced by a local Indy later in the year and will see what they know of Puma clutches. I wasn't aware that the springs can fall out, but doubt (hope) that mine is not too bad just yet as is it does only seem to rattle very occasionally. I would have thought that if the springs were worn that it would rattle all the time, but maybe they are spinning or moving around in some other way that makes the rattle come and go.

Started driving the 110 again today after bouncing it over the Pyrenees and the rattling has definitely not as noticeable but I am under no illusions that the clutch is on it's way out. Will need to take a call on what to do and as previously suggested, I will see if there are any other LR dealers who will look at it more sympathetically under warranty. Trouble is they are few and far between in Scotland so next nearest is in Kelso. Not sure if anyone has had any dealings so any comments appreciated.

Are there any alternatives to the LR made clutch that is likely to be more reliable?

I believe IRB clutch is from Truckfix?

According to FB today TMD are going to test various clutches from Truckfix James

Do we know if TMD or anyone else who has put some thought into this is going to offer a clutch swap service? I would prefer a day-trip to someone with plenty of hands-on experience of what to look for, what to replace & which parts to use to working it out myself with a local garage.

IRB certainly do and I would imagine TMD will. IRB would be the man for me, but I understand (like most) he is very busy and not always easy to get hold of. James

Hi all, not sure if anyone will see this however, I eventually put the 110 into Llloyd LR of Kelso to take a look as coming up to end of extended warranty. Same story as Pentland in that they could only tell if it was covered under warranty but stripping the clutch but fortunately, one of the springs was broken so all covered under warranty. They also suggested changing the master slave cylinder which was not covered but still saved me the best part of £1100.

I am in the same position with my 130. Rattling at idle but they won't cover the investigation.....

The clutch has been getting heavier too. Is that a sign? 1951 80" S1 2.0

Sounds like it to me... Mine did the same before I had it replaced... I asked for the Sachs clutch as it seems to be the one to go for... So far so good..

I left the rattling at idle for about 4 months before putting it into the garage. It never got any worse but not sure if leaving it that long contributed to the clutch spring eventually breaking i.e. if I had put it in as soon as the rattling started it may not have been covered under warranty. I think it is down to chance as to whether the warranty covers it or not. It is an expensive gamble though. the garage I took it into said they had a similar case the week before where it was not covered under warranty.

8275 miles, rattling on tick-over, sorted by warranty, no question of trying not to sort it. Now at 9000+ seems to be ok, bt i'll keep listening NormanD WE191
