Although I can not comment on the wear and tear part, I can say that my MY15 had the clutch replaced less than 1500 miles ago due the clutch springs being broken, she had covered 12,000 easy miles in the last year since I bought her.
I contacted My supplying dealer (sturgess, Leicester) regarding the rattling and they had it in for inspection, agreed a new clutch and booked in for replacement all within 1 day, there were no mention of agreeing with jlr although they may have done so. Clutch was replaced with no hassles...... BUT! I have now covered 1500 miles on the new clutch and it has again started to rattle under idle. My old clutch started at around 7000 miles. |

Why could that happen? Heavy towing? Suburban car racing? Too much off road?

Hi ChrisJ.
Seems to be hit and miss on the dealers. PLR initially stated it was the clutch plate springs and therefore covered by warranty. I then questioned why I needed to pay £900 if they knew what it was and were only getting in to photograph it to send to LR Warranty for authorisation. They then changed their tune to say they assumed it was the springs but I would have to take the risk by paying £900 in order to determine if it actually was. If it was not then I would have to pay for a new clutch. PLR did not seem to know what was, and was not covered by the warranty, so suggested I find out for myself. Not the greatest of customer service. Not sure i will be continuing with extended warranty beyond December. |

No towing, no heavy use, just general day to day stuff and the odd holiday down to Dorset or to the lakes.
It sounds as though they are not a defender dealer as such, I'm quite fortunate that sturgess sold a lot of defenders and know them very well, it may be worth looking for a dealer local to you that knows defenders a little better. The clutch spring problem is unfortunately not in common, although very annoying to say the least. |

Life expectancy of the current version of the Tdci clutch in normal usage seems to be around 50,000 miles.
Replacing a clutch would take about 4hrs with dealer facilities, in my opinion. |

The clutch on my 2012 110 was changed under warranty just before i bought it at 30k miles. I am hoping it doesn't mean a new clutch every 30k!! When it goes next I will be changing it for a Truckfix clutch. James

Take it to another dealer. Warranty managers are so variable in regards to how sympathetic they are to customer issues so it pays to shop around. Steve.

Mine's an MY 2012, too. 21k miles. Clutch doesn't rattle yet *touch wood* Forces on the clutch are higher if compared with 'normal' cars. That's why you have to be "extra careful". No harsh pedal actions. Don't declutch - disengage gear asap. That's what I've heard ... I'd expect a clutch to last for 120k miles ... Last edited by Jukathy on 10th Aug 2016 8:21pm. Just for info
The clutch gave up pretty much totally on my 15MY while on hols in Cornwall on Tuesday, got it to a dealers here and they have changed it and got car back to me in 2 days. Started finding downshifts to 5th and 4th were dragging one night, following morning it got worse, 50miles later couldn't get it in to reverse, clutch bite point was on the floor. Car has done 13k miles, all on road and driven same as I drive our 300tdi which has only ever had two clutches in 18 years (mostly due to being replaced when the clutch fork bursts through). Dealer said clutch springs had gone and replaced pressure plate and cover.... All seems fine so far. Don't feel I have abused the clutch as I drive like an old geezer now. |

I have just had the 90 in for its year 2 service with 20K on the clock, I complained about the gearshift was getting a but rough and a clunk could be heard on gear change, normally 3rd to 4th. The vehicle does quite a bit of towing work. Service done and they have changed the clutch and the crankshaft seal as that was leaking , they commented that the friction plate springs were broken. It now drives smoothly and the gear change is much improved. My last 2007 110 also had to have the clutch changed as well at 30K. Have they not learnt anything on clutch's since the issues surfaced with the early Pumas?

My 2012 40K mile 110 has an occasional clutch rattle at idle. It comes and goes but it operates as well as it did when new.
When it was still under warranty, I spoke to the local dealership and they were also quite happy to split the gearbox and inspect the clutch but couldn't guarantee that LR would cover the cost of this work or any replacement parts. Rather than risking main dealer labour rates to find out what I already know (that the clutch plate springs are worn) I decided to wait until it actually breaks and then get it fixed by an Indy or trusted local garage. In the long term it will be cheaper than paying for an extended warranty, particularly if the warranty terms mandate LR dealership servicing. |
