Cheers Slim.
Shaggy, it's a rare occurrence, but after doing quite a bit of research, I've concluded that what happened was the cam bearings became slightly misaligned, restricting oil flow, resulting in a substantial drop in oil pressure, which I noticed, but not enough of a drop for the oil warning light to come on. The lack of oil flow resulted in the confirmed destruction of at least the big end bearings, but likely most of the rest of the engine bearings - essentially making it a write off. The research I did suggests this is heard of amoung all related engines - 200 and predecessors up to the 2.5 N/A. It just doesn't happen very often. 1998 110 300Tdi White Hard Top |
