Puma 2.4 not starting ..... immobiliser???
I've a Puma 2.4 basic spec truck cab (no red led, no plip, no CDL etc) which sometimes when cold only cranks for a few secs then dies, as if the immobiliser has activated. But, If I remove the negative battery terminal for a few mins and replace it always starts without fail....... Have even thought about fitting an isolator to simplify this process Laughing

So far, I have read all similar posts on here and checked the usual relays under drivers seat, 10as unit is/was set to passive disabled, starter and battery are ok as it always starts after removing and replacing the negative battery lead. Question

Can anyone tell me if I'm on the right track here? Thumbs Up

Once connected have you pressed the plip multiple times until until synced?

There is no plip to sync. Plip is disabled in 10as unit.

Check the earth is tight on battery terminal, and earthing underneath.
Sounds a bit like poor continuity.
Hopefully someone will be along to point you in the righ direction with a diagram shortly.

I take it when you have got it going it's fine then?

Continuity appears to be ok as it will start no problem when it wants to, and when it starts it runs perfect.

I've read this forum back to front and it appears to a common problem on pumas with plips etc, but have not found a satisfactory solution to 10as immobiliser fault that is 'only' disarmed with the key switch.

I've also pm'd lorryman100 earlier as he appears to be the guru around here but he has not been as active recently.

Ah yes, Brian knows his stuff with these things.

Sounds intermittent then, maybe worth checking the connector at the rear of the instrument cluster too.
Loose connectors and or earths are often culprits.
Fuses might be worth looking at too, check they are secure but you probably already have along with the relays like you said.

It was previously intermittent, but today its every time. Tried it about 5 times today. Would only start each time by disconnecting the battery for a few mins and reconnecting. Haven't driven it today just tried starting it.

Didn't know there was a possible issue with the connector on instrument cluster??

Please keep the suggestions coming.

Also, been looking for a well recommended diagnostic unit, but so far can't decide what's worth getting ... nanocom appears to have failed with the evo Sad and don't like the iidtool vin lock system Sad

The instrument cluster is just a possibility I can think of it may be.
It's possible.

I'd see if you can contact Gary @ Alive Tuning for electronics advice, he may be able to help you on this as well. Thumbs Up

Thanks, I understand professional help is always available.

I'll bet it's a bad connection somewhere just need to find it, and would prefer not to pull the dash apart just yet!

Also, I've had extremely good results in the past talking to owners that have successfully resolved the exact same problems.

Okay, just had a chat with Gary regarding this.
He said the IPAC, which I believe is the instrument cluster could well be the culprit.
First I'd disconnect the battery again, disconnect the IPAC plug then reconnect it and then the battery after too.
See if it's solved, if not 2.4 clusters are interchangeable so yiu could give a new one a go then.
All diagnostic settings etc and stored in the ECU so changing the IPAC is no problem.

It could be just the connector loose, or possibly moisture but most likely the former.

One says optimistically anyway! Thumbs Up

I had a similar problem, it would start but then went into limp mode. It was water dripping onto the AS10 unit and corroding the terminals. Don't know if this helps but heh who knows?

Thanks Merlin, read one of your posts discussing this so checked the 10as unit yesterday, was bone dry and the connections appeared to be all good.

Instrument cluster appears to do a bit of work in the starting process, from the manual:-

The instrument cluster acts as a gateway, converting the signal transmitted from the anti-theft system module into a signal
that is recognizable by the ECM. This signal is then transmitted by the instrument cluster to the ECM which will energize
the starter relay and the fuel injectors to allow the engine to be started.

I'm away out now to check the connection as suggested. Thanks

Instrument cluster removed and unplugged ...... all appeared to be ok with the plug and socket.

Reconnected and it started, but would be very surprised if that's the problem fixed ....... will try it again later.

The IPAC is set up to allow the CanBus ECM to talk to the non-CanBus, stone-age AS10, so it is crucial to the starting sequence.
