Good to hear you got to the root of the problem, and nice tips on the ignition switch replacement.

2.4 2008 Puma non start this evening. Tried two sets of keys and locked unlocked etc but nothing. Over the years it happened once or twice but always started with the lock/unlock fix. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

If I was coming to this in the normal course of events I'd be diagnosing a faulty solenoid on the starter motor. There is a click when the key is turned and then nothing. As the starter motor was replaced a few months ago I cannot see this being the problem. The replacement was a Bosch. I've a mechanic coming in during the week and like everyone else with this issue I'll be trying the fixes suggested here.
Strange how it can be working perfectly one day and then the next day just give up the ghost. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel 1992 110 200tdi csw -Zikali 2008 110 2.4 tdci csw-Zulu 2011 110 2.4 tdci csw-Masai |

I would check all the connections to that starter motor, given it was replaced a couple of months ago as they may have worked loose and are not fully connecting.
Also what symptoms were exhibited to cause you to replace the starter motor ? |

Also worth checking for a faulty starter relay (under the o/s/f seat on a 2.4), if this fails there will be no power to the starter.

Everything electrical works including the courtesy light. I will try the battery negative terminal disconnect. If it does not kick I will know it is something else and hopefully easily tracked down.

![]() Click image to enlarge Check the 30A fuse (undocumented fuse for starter solenoid) in the pair on the middle right of this photo. Bottom right is ECU fuse, not related to this problem. ![]() ![]() |

I disconnected the negative terminal, left it off for a few minutes and then reconnected it. It still would not start. All I get is a "click" which makes me think it could be the solenoid or something else mundane! I will see what the mechanic thinks. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

I think that’s a very reasonable reason to replace it ![]() |

Back in action. The thing that sorted it (hopefully
![]() I had removed the negative battery lead and reconnected it as suggested but to no avail as I stated earlier. I had the mechanic check all the technical stuff but all was O.K. He suggested putting the negative battery clamp as far down as it would go on the battery terminal before tightening it up and this seemed to do the job. So anyone else having this bother don't just attach the clamp to the terminal, force it down then tighten it. Sounds innocuous enough but it seems to be working for me. Any lapses and I'll let you know, but for now all is good. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel 1992 110 200tdi csw -Zikali 2008 110 2.4 tdci csw-Zulu 2011 110 2.4 tdci csw-Masai |

Hello quys,
I have exacltly the same issue, crank but not firing. By reading all the topics I am quite convinced the solution is the "shunt". I have a very basic technical knowledge but I must give it a try to get the life back in my beloved Defender. Obvisously a very "dumb"guestion ![]() Sorry for this.. ![]() Defender 90 TD5 2001 - 225.000 km Defender 110 TD5 - 2000 - 120.000 Have: Defender 90 Puma 2.4 2010 - 211.000 km Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/landrover_diary/ |
