I have already sorted the jammed gear, but want to stop it doing it again.
I am going to try a new set of four Transit MT82 OEM detents as on inspection they can all be changed externally without opening the box up. They can’t be any worse than the twelve year old ones in it currentl. |

I assumed that his last picture on that short instruction is showing the detent location.
This video from a forum member shows a nice way how to remove the detents @46:40 ?t=2801 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing 2012 90 CSW, 2.2TDCI, Santorini Black |

All detents can be removed without stripping the box but I don't know if you can access them all with the box in the car. All MT82 detents are horrible cheap (but high priced) nasty things and I think only the springs differ between old and new.
I always make sure I lubricate the springs and balls thoroughly before fitting since I am not convinced they get any lube from the gearbox when in service. |

Agreed - I am not paying £100 for four genuine detents! The OEM Transit ones are £9 each so will buy a set and try them.
Luckily my MT82 is early so has the easily removable ones. I have already previously replaced the shifter housing due to cracked lever ball end, had the shifter yoke come loose on the rail twice (not since I loctite studlocked it), fitted the revised shifter mounting collars and fitted the Ashcroft output kit. |

Do you have part numbers for the Ford parts?

There is a good parts cross reference and part dimensions on the above page. OEM ones appear to be made by INA who are a decent Ford OEM. |

Those also appear to be the same style as the original type, so can be removed non-destructively. Let us know how you get on, this could be a very useful approach.

Had this problem with mine. Stuck in 2nd gear.
On removal of gearstick housing, detent was there but sticking up 8mm or so. Ball had come out the front along with the spring. Looks like it failed with ball coming out the front. It was the later modified detent too! Cheers James 110 2012 XS Utility 130 2011 M57 bespoke Camper 90 2010 Hardtop 90 M57 1988 Hardtop |

That's not at all good. Box out and strip job, or are the spring and ball recoverable?
