TDI transfer box on a Puma TDCI?
Hi,

The transfer box on the Puma has died, and there happens to be a TDI transfer box knocking about the farm, does anyone know if it would be compatible with the TDCI gearbox or does the fact that the donor gearbox was 5 speed and the TDCI a 6 speed make it an unlikely pairing?

Thanks,
David.

It should fit though. You may have to modify the wiring to the Diff Lock Switch and will have to use the Puma Speedo Sensor.

The gearing will make your engine revs higher for the same speed when compared to the old Puma Transferbox. Depending on how you use the car this might not be a problem. 1995 300tdi Defender 90 P/UP

You are going to have an exceptinoally low first gear!

unless its a disco tdi tbox it will more than likely be a 1.4 box. old 110 could be a 1.6 but not many of them about now. Puma as std is 1.2 as above.

if you do a fair amount of work over 50mph it will work harder. 1st will become redundant. assuming you have 31" tyres as std. Cheers

newbie here.

but itn't the low gear ratio a good thing when it comes to offroading?
because my friend with Patrols always brag about their 85% reduction gear....

also what if I change the tyre to 35?
to be more exact, what is the difference between changing transferbox gear ratio to changing diff ratio?
any pros and cons?

cheers

Well you've got low range...

Changing transfer box ratio has a similar effect to changing diff ratio (in high range) it's just the speed reduction happens in a different place. I think I'm right in saying they all have the same low range ratio.

Try a gear ratio calculator

1.4 with 35s would work far better than the 31s with 1.2 box. i am not sure on exact difference will see if i can find the ratio calculator. Cheers

from what i can see 31s on a 1.2 against 35s on a 1.4 are near enough the same from above spreadsheet Cheers
