I'm sure it's about 10 mph difference. It's been so long g since I've owned a TDI/td5 with stock gearing. It's the first thing I do to defenders when I buy them. Much better on fuel, quieter, less stress on the engine.

For me this works in conjunction with a map - the two working together to make pulling out of junctions better with the taller first gear, and motorway and A road cruising quieter with the lower engine revs / noise.
I was expecting more mpg - but I've only just fitted mine and I think it's coincided with my FPR springing a fresh leak. Well worth doing - although the Ashcroft gear route is very expensive. A cheaper option is to pick up a 2nd hand transfer box and swap them over. |

if your ever up north in Lancashire ill take you out as i have run this set up for many years, ideally needs a remap depending on vehicle spec and tyre size and load but suits the td5

My landy has a Disco 1 Transfer box which pretty much does the same thing.
I have an JE Engineering remap on a 10P engine. My truck is brilliant on long drives, but (and there is always a but), the truck is more prone to stalling in 1st gear when pulling away when cold, now I have learned how to drive with it, so its never a problem and I very rarely stall it now. But i do notice it bogs down a little bit easier when towing a trailer. However I don't tow trailer very often and more often i'm driving to and from work, but doing it at 60 mph, with no trauma to my ears (or engine). I love how it pulls in 4th and 5th, far more user friendly, not nearly as much gear work without the mod. Cheers Andy |

So to those that have 1.2 gears, would fitting them and the v8 fifth gear work or be too high?
I have the higher 5th gear in mine already. Sure I'll need a transfer box one day! |

I didn't enjoy the 1.2 experience. I found it put second and third gears in the wrong place ie the ratio was wrong for when you need them. Definitely better on the motorway but not enough to make me stay with it and I went back to a 1.4 transfer box.

I think Mo yours is a 200tdi ? I think the Tdi is 50ft/lbs of torque less than a standard Td5 and I don't think a Td5 in standard guise has the grunt to make it work - it must have been awful!

The Ashcroft 1.2 kits was one of the best mods I've done to my td5. Rather than consciously having to try to maintain 65mph on the motorway, it now happily cruises at 70, and then a remap on top gives you plenty in reserve.
However, if you regularly tow heavy loads be warned that it does make first a little tall. Its absolutely no problem when non-towing (first feels like first on most other cars), but I could imagine it being hard work to pull away up a hill with a 3.5 tonne load on the back, but then we do have a low box for that right? |

I've got the taller 5th and 1.22 transfer box in my Td5. Lovely on the motorway and pulls 5th no problem, although it is tuned with a vnt
I don't have a rev counter but would estimate 2400 rpm at 70? On a recent trip cruising at 80mph (gps) it returned 25mpg, which I didn't think was bad. 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon 1990 Vogue SE Triumph Tiger Explorer 1200 Td5 90 Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic50767.html Tdi 110 Thread https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic69562.html RRC Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic54492.html Instagram http://www.instagram.com/george_grafton |

I've got the 1.2 in my tweaked 200tdi 110 and 1.4 in my mapped td5 110. Both have big tyre setups. I drive these back to back regularly.
If the transfer box ever blew on my td5 then I think I'd just get a 1.4 again with the taller 5th gear mod in main gearbox. 1.2 is great on motorway and requires a slightly different driving style to the 1.4 With oversized tyres and a heavily loaded 110 you may struggle with 1.4 on a hill start. I had to drop mine into low once to pull away on a really steep hill without slipping the clutch. |

I took the roof rack off mine recently, will happily do 28mpg sat at 70-75 on a run now, up from 24mpg at 65-70 with the rack. |

I've found the same as Mo but 1st and 2nd quite tall. Love the way it pulls in 4th though (300Tdi)
Do tow reasonably often but not quite enough to warrant changing back, cruising in 5th on motorways is much nicer but it does lack a bit of power (but my other car is a 3.6TDV8). Once I've given stuff a good clean and service I'm sort of tempted by a VNT though... Ed 82 Hotspur Sandringham 6x6 95 Defender 110 300Tdi |
