Check the rear damper bushes especially the lower ones.
Pings sound like a stone or similar pinging the stone guards on the brakes. |

Are either of the above pricey? Will it get worse / louder? |

Bushes are cheaper than the above, either could be culprit.

One of my rear springs just moves a little on the mount and makes a noise sometimes when moving off. A sort of Spring twang noise. Could you have the same? Discos used to have a rubber comfort bush on top of the Spring. I've thought of fitting them.

The ball joint isn't too expensive, but it's a pain to replace and 'press' in to the bracket, so I'd spend a few more quid and get one already inserted into the bracket - that is of course if it's the issue!
As Steve says, check out the damper bushes too. Quick and easy. If it's a definite 'clunk' then my money's on the ball joint. If you're intending to keep the truck, then I'd invest in this: http://www.gwynlewis4x4.co.uk/product/a-fr...n-housing/ Easy to fit (and GL supplies a kit with the bolts and nylocs so you don't have to faff about!). |

Nevilerover - You are quite right, on my old rear springs did have a slight knock near the top as the coils touched.
On the rear springs I fitted new last week they have upper coil wrap around isolators (prevents the above issues) I also fitted top of Spring isolators and lower Spring isolators. There is a minor lift and ride quality is superb, I was pleased and very surprised but Genuine I went for are not cheap. Talking £90 for isolators only. Scrabble - That looks good, I was surprised by the price I was expecting £150 plus at least. How would you go about checking for play in it? Never took much time to check mine. As far as I'm concerned I have no issue but one to bear in mind. |

Potentially the A frame ball joint as has been said but other possibles are diff, pinion flange, prop uj's, drive flanges, main to transfer box intermediate shaft ...and a few others Steve.

Looking is ok but apart from getting down under and dirty and actually feeling for play in some of the areas with your hands your best bet is to get someone to gently drive the vehicle back and forth a short distance to try and replicate the sound while you try and pinpoint the area by walking beside the vehicle and listening from outside. Carrying this out on soft ground is sometimes more effective than on a hard surface. Steve.
