What tyre black do you use...
OK, so we own Defenders which should be muddy...

But if your like me and most of the ones I've seen on this form are kept mint.... then you lot like your tyre shine also.

What do you use and is it long lasting?

I've used, Autogym and meguiars gel and recently some sort of paint on shine (not that good). Out of these Meguires gel seems the best.

Autoglym is crap as its water based so washes off to easy and doesn't last

i use valetpro, brush on.

If you don;t like the idea or brushing it on, i found Auto Finesse's to be good too.

This is my car sporting Valetpro

I read somewhere that the best tyre shine is carplan tyre silk. It's in a aerosol tin and apparently really good. I've never found where to buy it so stick with Maguires tyre gel Thumbs Up 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon

Whilst I have no issues with keeping our beloved Defenders in mint condition, including polishing paintwork. I have to say 'blacking' tyres is a step too far for me! But each to their own, it's your vehicle Thumbs Up James

i do feel they look better for it, but it also condition the rubber and helps prevent cracking

i don't like any brush on / wipe on as its a faff with the rugged profile

sprays are my fav, then i used some bilt hammer product after its dry to wipe over the lettering to bring it up white again...

I admire your dedication, for me it's just too much keeping the letters white on the inside Wink Rob

I use Armor All tyre foam. Spray on and walk away. Tyres look great and protects them more importantly (reason I use it). Couldn't be easier.

Careful Chaps

Until recently I liberally used just about every brand of tyre dressing - Autoglym, Tyre slik etc. I always thought they protected the rubber from UV and cracking, which was OK when I was going through two sets of tyres a year. Then I bought the Defender and as we know these tyres can last for years. After two years my original BFGs split at the sidewalls and so did their replacement Avons so I did a bit of research ( on the net of course - where else ?) Laughing

If I remember rightly tyres contain compounds which prevent cracking as part of their construction which are drawn to the surface in use. Most tyre dressings contain either solvents or silicones which either block this process or draw the compounds out too quickly. Two years of slapping this stuff on after every wash caused the above damage to the best of my knowledge.

There are products out there which do not have this side effect. They mostly protect against UV and are rather costly. Can't remember brand names off the top of my head but they were primarily developed for use on boats whose plastics, rubber and vinyls have greater exposure to sunlight.

Since I bought my current BFG KO2s I just use a stiff brush and household soap. They come out OK but I really miss that shiny black look. Not taking any chances though. By the way I don't do heavy towing and I'm utterly anal when it comes to accurate tyre pressure.

There's tons of stuff on Google about this. As I've said if you change your tyres every year then its not a problem but I would like to get 5 years out of this set !

Mine just go a sort of reddish brown colour which I think is just road muck.

Interesting whay you say about the effect it had with the UV.

I must admit today I did think of getting some to put on my spare tyre to protect it from the sun as I' can't seem to find a decent spare wheel cover which will go over a 265/75/16 without some logo platerd all over it facing the sky!

Going on what you say sounds like it would be better for me to keep looking! Running Restoration Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/post323197.html#323197
