At MOT time you would also need to have the same emissions as a Puma.No different to me fitting a N/A diesel engine in my TD5.It would have to meet the same emission standards as a TD5. Pov.spec,ftw. 2006, 110,TD5.

Would t be legal? By that I mean would it meet all the emission regulations for the registered build of the vehicle? 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

Only 2 benefits I can think of that the TD5 has. (I've never driven one mind you)
Is the sound is sweet, and it's 5 pot.

And more economical
Faster
Has MEUI fuel injection
Has a timing chain instead of a poxy belt
Can produce V8 killing performance easily
Dead simple to work on
Has a decent cooling system

I'm on my 9th, also look after several site vehicles that never see a road and also own a 200 and 300. Had several Tdis of my own, and a 2.4 but as an all rounder the Td5 is without a doubt the king.

And the gearbox remains connected to the transfer box indefinitely on the TD5, the driveline lasts longer, and the clutch doesn't need changing every 50k miles (though admittedly the poxy DM flywheel needs changing every 100,000 miles).

I am absolutely certain that the engine could be mated to the box without too much trouble, but the problem of unsuitable ratios, especially the very low first which is unsuited to the TD5's power/torque charactersistics and dangerously low in low box without idle jack, remains.

The problem of the less-that-ideal output adaptor shaft also would remain.

If you were going down the TD5 retrofit route, why not go for an auto box?

I don't know how you'd go about making the TD5 comply with the later emissions regulations, and I doubt that it is economically viable (there must be a reason LR re-engineered the vehicle to fit the TDCi).

OK - Did not expect this many comments in a short timeframe!!

We have a 10 plate 130 tipper TDCi that has done 120,000 HARD miles and has a cooked engine, cracked block and cracks in pistons. Customer does not want the TDCi problems - he has a fleet of 10 TDCi 110 and 130s but cannot get rid of such a specialist vehicles and wants reliable vehicle. He has asked me to fit a TD5.

300 TDi will not take the punishment that these vehicle get - they weight 2.5 tonnes empty and tow a chipper daily when fully loaded. -

TD5 is a superb, plentiful available, known engine with stretch potential in a working vehicle - 180 bhp no problem!!!.

I have started work but just wondered if anyone may have done similar.

I have a D2 engine, Def G/Box and complete TD5 wiring looms and plan to keep the TDCi bulkhead and dash( less instrument pack) - I will keep you up dated in this (mad) project. There are 4 more tippers so could be busy this year!!!

Regards

would a 3.2 conversion not be a better idea?

on a budget check out the cummins LR Facebook page... lots of 6bt and 4bt's now... bomb proof reliable and plenty of pulling power..

Won't you have to make it EU5 compliant?

I don't Know if it would need to be EU5 compliant. I suppose this is no different to Twisted or Nene Overland shoving a 6.5 LS in a new Puma 90!!

The idea of TD5 keeps the fleet easier to source parts in the future and it will be a more straight forward job than the Cummins route which looks far to complex trying to make a truck engine run in a Land Rover. Great for a one off conversion but these are working vehicles which need to be reliable and cost effective to run as a fleet. I did think of the Merc engines but there is no manual gearbox that is easy to fit and auto as a tow vehicle working hard does not work long term.

We looked at this to replace the R380 in the TD5 with the MT82,

mating the engine to the MT82 wasn't difficult, we did this but the problem was the lengths for the box and shifter, i.e. for the conversion to be commercially viable it needs to be 'bolt in', because the engine or transfer case would need moving and the shifter came through the tunnel in the wrong place this added a lot of installation complications / costs which is why we dint pursue it,
