Graduated in Automotive Engineering Design 12 years ago, having already had over a year in chassis electronics at Bentley Motors (the active aerofoil on the GT was mine along with a couple to other things on the state limousine and other secret mulliner projects).
Following graduation I returned to Bentley as an application and project engineer for chassis systems mainly doing Tyre Pressure Monitoring and adaptive suspension but meant most of my time was spent behind the wheel of various Bentley's, Audi's and VW's and clocked up in excess of 100k miles in Bentleys around Europe and US in 3 years! from the depths of frozen Finland to Death Valley in the states and probably every engineering test track in between! After that I moved to a certain well known 4x4 manufacturer and had various roles within technology research focusing on vehicle capability and ride and handling for which I've been very lucky with some of my activities working with the press and other similar events around the world. Left school at 15 for a heavy plant apprenticeship. Never looked back. Currently a heavy plant and diesel engineer for caterpillar. Worked on everything and anything from land rovers to 300 ton off highway trucks. Love every day of it.

Always fascinating to read about other people's jobs - always sound more fun than mine!
Work for JLR, having worked my way through Rover Group, under BAe, BMW, Ford and now Tata ownership. Done lots of different roles - started in Service managing the TestBook and T4 diagnostic tool development, Technical Publications running the print and distribution operation and then delivered RAVE, where we put all the data on CD, worked on the new Mini looking after the stillborn plan to sell in the UK through Rover dealers, set up Customer Relationship Centres across Europe for Ford, ran Sales Reporting and Planning team, and now work in Product Marketing as a Product Manager. I change/update IT trading platforms and legal agreements software to support large investment banks with their day to day operations as well as looking to the next generation of software. All to aid the onboarding of clients and companies trading.
We have just brought in a document management system that can scan a page of paper and pick out legal clauses, trade rates and descriptions, from anywhere in any order from hundreds of different legal agreements and contracts... interestingly enough, this same company's software analysed the complete works of shakespeare and identified that there wasn't just one style of writer but many different writers... In other words... I sit at a desk all day in Canary Wharf getting fat and dreaming of the outdoors! |

I am currently in-between jobs so making the most of it with couple months of chilling in Tenerife and having quality time with my daughter and my MTB at the parents holiday villa. I have a temporary agency job lined up on my return to the UK on a brand new Bell wheel loader at a quarry in Cardiff for Cemex. Should last me the rest of the summer. I work as a contracts manager for a Structural steel company employing about 70 staff, i started working for them when i was 17 as a workshop apprentice, served my time on the band saw cutting steel!
Worked my way up to fabricator, then became site based, then became site supervisor, then 2 years ago i moved into the office to do what i do now, We specialise in steel frame but do anything from supplying a bricklayer a lintel beam, to putting up new 400 ton steel frame buildings. I spend 50% of my time on the road, visiting sites, helping the lads out that work on my jobs, and the other half is spent in the office doing my lift plans, method statements and all the paperwork side of the job. I also have my Class 1 License and some times drive the wagons if no one else can, it's good like that as it keeps me busy and means there's variety. After running and owning my own company (in the printing industry) I decided to sell up, leave the rat race and move south. I now work for Waitrose on minimum wage, 20 hours a week, no hassle, no grief, just good fun and love working again.

^^^ No worries, yes I did well out of it, I had a cancer scare 5 yrs ago which only came to light after falling off my bike, lucky. I'm 48, start at 6am, finish at 11am, not stressful, just easy.
I don't really need the extra money but it keeps me sane, gets me up in the morning and meet new people every day! Great. |

Lambley, I understand your sentiments entirely. When I left HM Forces I felt I wanted a break before starting a new career. But at the same time I didn't want to become a bum, and Mrs Grenadier couldn't get time off for a big 6-month trip. So I worked in a groovy little deli/café in SW London making tall lattes and focaccia sandwiches. Genuinely, it was great, meeting lovely people, having a chat, enjoying life, watching the world go by. And slowly getting to know the regulars, some who became friends. No hassle whatsoever. Prior to that, just before heading to Sandhurst my previously most enjoyable job was working in a small, independent book shop. The only gripe, less about me than on behalf of my colleagues, was the assumption by some clientel (not many, but some), that if you worked in a café you were somehow beneath them, perhaps a failure, and they would noticeably 'talk down to you'. Maybe this was a 'London thing', (and I hope you don't get the same), but such a shallow, judgemental attitude when most of in the café had likely acheived far more than these little 'middle managers' scuttling about during their 9-5. So little did they know that I was a ten-year Army Officer, the owner and my boss a retired Vet (he noticed it to) and amongst my colleagues we had a number of international travellers who included an opera singer, a classical symphony violinist, a graphic designer and a recently qualified architect.
