I retexture roads so they have more grip therefore safer to drive on.
 Well someone has to do it.

I work for a construction company in West Africa, part of which involves playing in Defenders

I started working for Tesco as I was leaving school at 18 at a local superstore, stayed with them part time all through university, when I eventually graduated with a degree in Business Management. I started off stacking shelves in the Beers Wines & Spirits aisle, then gradually moved to a warehouse role, bringing in deliveries and sorting stock. When I turned 21 I applied to transfer into the Tesco.com home delivery as a driver, and I stayed doing that for ages, enjoying being out & about in my van. As I went on in the department, I started getting more responsibility, including running the whole dotcom operation on a Sunday, in the absence of the department manager. It was while working for Tesco.com as a driver that I bought my 90, while still a student living at home and working part time. Prior to this i used to cycle the 2.5 miles to and from work.

When I graduated in 2009, there was very little in the way of graduate jobs, and to be honest not many of them appealed to me, I enjoyed the people and the environment I was working in already. I signed up for the in-house management training scheme, and within a year I secured a placement as a Stock Control manager in a slightly bigger store. I stayed there for nearly a year (it was a maternity cover), then finally got appointed to a permanent position in a small superstore in Peebles, Scottish Borders. It was a 48 mile round trip, but the commute was usually trouble free as most traffic was heading into Edinburgh as I was heading out. At 5am I would often only pass one or two other vehicles on the way to work, bread lorries and milk trucks on their way to deliver to us after I'd opened the store for 6am. Click image to enlarge The road to Peebles one snowy morning- glad I have the Defender as my daily driver I found being a Line Manager in Stock Control a very interesting and varied job, from acting as Duty Manager in charge of the whole store, to performing stock counts with my team, or doing a nightshift to relay a whole aisle as part of a 'category change'. The latter was always fun to see the first few customers walking into the aisle and not finding anything where they expected it to be 
Earlier this year, around the time of Convoy for Heroes, I was forced into redundancy through a management restructuring. Since this happened in May I've been enjoying spending a bit more time riding, and successfully passed my Class C LGV2 test. I had planned to find a temporary job or agency work driving rigid HGVs while searching for a new career, but the day after I passed my HGV test I fell off my horse and fractured my wrist. I only recently was given the go-ahead to drive again by the physio, so I'm hoping to pick up the last part of my Initial Driver CPC (the CPC Practical) in the next few weeks. After leaving university I went to London to find work in TV, always wanted to work in that area. Found a job working in a large well respected International sales house essentially sending scripts and publicity materials around the world. Was lucky enough to meet Bryan Cosgrove & Mark Hall of Danger Mouse fame as well as Whoopi Goldburg. It was a great job and I learnt a lot about the preproduction phase and licensing but it was very sales focused so I left and joined Carlton to work as a scheduler working on the ill fated onDigital precursor to Freeview, unfortunately it was ahead of its time and the company went south. Then moved to a start up company Tv shopping where I cut my teeth on live broadcast I was there for 15 years until we were asset stripped by investors! Probably the best thing to ever happen as I was made redundant and got a new job as head of production for another start up where I built and managed their broadcast infrastructure, sadly this ended in a bump too as investors pulled out. So have been unemployed for the last 7 weeks, been doing some voluntary work in a school helping kids read so that's been good. But am taking a slight career change as I join a big corporate shortly to work as a project manager within broadcast operations.
Such varied jobs everyone's got it's fascinating, always thought a documentary on forums and those that visit them would make a cracking doc. |

I guess my job is unusual-ish
Full time I work as Hydrometric Engineer (Install and calibrate river flow measurement and flood warning equipment). Its dull the majority of the time, but I do occasionally get to go to nice places, and access places that often are not accessible to the public. I drive a Transporter 4motion that gets me to most sites but have had to use the Defender to get to some of the sites with particularly poor access in very wet weather and a couple of 'critical' flood warning sites that required maintenance in the snow last year. In my part-time (self employed) job I deliver swiftwater rescue training, and water rescue support for events and civil engineering works. Probably the most interesting jobs I have had on recently, I drove one of the camera boats recently for the Red Bull 'Outrow' on the river severn which was quite cool, and previously worked on the water rescue crew for the filming of Javerts suicide in the film 'Les Miserable' a few years ago, which was filmed at Poultney Weir in Bath. Time for a quick update: I completed my CPC and also put myself through my Class 1 (C+E), passing my test on Friday 13th. I started looking for a temporary job in the run up to Christmas, I got a driving assessment at the local Tesco Distribution centre in Livingston, with a view to being employed by an agency. I passed the assessment with flying colours (no bad habits, took my time doing the reverse manoeuvres etc), and was then inducted onto site & given an agency ID card. Last Monday I had a buddy to come out with me & just keep an eye on me, well this was the first time I'd been out without L-plates on! We did a couple of stores in the Glasgow area, including the St Enoch Centre to the underground loading area- not the best place to get an artic, but I got in & out with no damage & my nails intact. Tuesday was a bit slow as there weren't many runs going, ended up going to East Kilbride in a rigid vehicle & finishing after that.
After a day off on Wednesday (not required) I was flying solo in this rig on Thursday: Click image to enlarge It only had 1200 miles on the clock when I got it. Have done a whole three days on my own now, although I have a lot of experience in unloading deliveries from my years working in stores. I'm still thoroughly enjoying the driving, and the challenge of getting an artic with a 13m trailer into the right place. Still very much a temporary job while I continue the search for a new career, and I would still have the option to continue driving on an adhoc basis depending what career I end up in. I trained as an telecommunications engineering apprentice with BT in the early 80's and stayed with them until '93 finally ending up in a technical sales role. Left there and joined a 'start-up' telecoms company owned by the National Grid called Energis. Following this I worked in IT for a few years then joined a well known cable company as Operations Director. Since then I have worked at various mobile operators and one big satellite TV co. Spent time in lots of European countries, South Africa, USA and India along the way and enjoyed the majority of it. I run a small business installing and commissioning integrated security systems on a sub contract basis.
Our largest project to date was commissioning the 26km of fence line CCTV at the 2012 Olympics
We are also installing and commissioning Systems on the QEOP Legacy Project

How I sympathise MOG ! I turn 50 at Christmas and I have the 'up a few times during the night' enlarged prostate issue which appears to blight half the male population. The doc recommended regular handfuls of pumpkin seeds and, whether its placebo or not, seems to work although I'm sick of the flipping' things by now ! |

Fascinating thread. Surprised I've not clocked it before. To quote (I think) the News of the World, on this forum, 'All human life is there'. Me - trainee quantity surveyor after school ( first contract 'Custard Towers', Aldershot - the Catering Corps training school - apparently no one ever passed the course), then police for 30 years, retired in '99 as a traffic inspector. All sorts of nice cars to drive, then looking after licensing enforcement for the council in Bristol, which meant helping good practice as well as applying sanctions to naughty pubs, clubs and taxi drivers. Now retired - bit doing a bit of licensing consultancy. One wife - livid

Great thread, i left school at 16 and my job was already sorted for me, as i was going to work for my brother in law to be a plumber in London, but after 6 months of it ,i hated the job and even more being in London after living in Devon for nearly 10 years. I had always wanted to be an artic driver, but you had to be 21 to take the test, so i had to find a job till i was 21. I found a job and i have been doing it for nearly 36 years now, and i love every moment of it, I'm a Thatcher, this is where my landy comes in to play as its a pick up for work (and pleasure) and its a keeper
