I just had a quick look back through the posts and noticed a comment regarding midges.....

Insect repellent- 'Smidge' works quite well, as does DEET (not very good for your skin!) - the oily version of Avon 'skin so soft' is also purported to work well.

I'll be chucking in a couple of cheap mozzie nets too.

I'm hoping that the midges will be relatively 'tame' in May- they tend to really make their presence known a bit later on in the year!

I was considering a different campsite next to the River Spean but decided against it based on getting eaten alive when I stayed there a few years ago!

In terms of food- I don't know what folk will have planned but there is a pub in Newtonmore called the Glen Hotel which certainly used to do good food.- Alternatively for the best food around, the place to go is the 'Glenspean Lodge'. It's probably a 40min drive towards Fort William, but the food is amazing and the folk who run it are lovely people!

Yeah most of the grub in the pubs and hotels is pretty good up that way... either that or throwaway BBQs for me!!

If the weather is good I suspect we will be getting the barbecue on the go too!

Just a heads up that I've seen over the last year or so, an outright ban at campsites of any barbaques or fire pits that sit on the grass due to 'unrecoverable damage' that these cause - easiest fix is £30 fire pit from go outdoors or something like that.
I will fit in with everyone, BBQ's or pub is always good, only pubs could be tough with 10 vehicles potentially?

NB for those thinking of getting Avon Skin so Soft, current versions no longer have the anti-midge ingredient! I don't know when this changed but it seems to be at least 5 years since it worked against our midgies.

The recommendation I usually get from people who spend a lot of time in the midge war zone is to get Smidge.

I have one of these, but in a slightly smaller version- think we paid about £15 for it!

Can't seem to find anyone who stocks them at the moment as ours is starting to get a bit rickety after 3-4 tears of camping trips so could probably do with replacement at some point!

Folds away to a sensible size. Should be good to feed a couple or one hungry mouth Laughing

Would it be useful/worthwhile if a few of us (at least half the squad) bought/brought some 2 way radio sets so we can keep in touch on convoy, during off road legs etc?

As it happens I am a licensed radio amateur so if there were another in the group we could run front and rear to shepherd things along.

Was thinking those wee VHF / digital walkie talkie jobbies so RP could go out the window.
That way we don't get others challenging our freqs etc.

I know that Ian used to have a number of vhf sets- we used to use them for all of the instructor team to keep in touch on the estate- I'll ask if he still has them and may be able to make them available to use.
