Thanks!

So, what oil do you use? And how does it compare to the Magnatec 5w30?

Castrol Magnatec low HTHS is named Professional A1.

Normal Magnatec is A3/B4 or only c3 or only b4 or.............

Another study that showed top ring wear rate increased by the factor (3.5/HTHS)^2.15 for the HTHS viscosity range 2.7-3.5.

It seems strange to me that you have such a range of 'supermarket' oils in the EU. In SA you only get the well-known brands, so we tend to stick to them.

Personally I would spend more putting the best engine oil possible in my landy because I intend to keep it forever. My advice: only use the known brands - Castrol, Shell, Mobil, etc.

the oil if just fine. There are at least 2 types of synth Mobil 1 5w-30 and both are ok. Mobil 1 ESP 5w-30 has a higher HTHS value which is a bit "less Fuel Efficient". Puma 110" SW

Just to revive this a bit, why the specific spec on the oil? Aren't our trucks supposed to be able to go to the most remote parts of the world and what not? If you do go to such places, I doubt you'll find the proper spec oil when and if you need it.

That being said, here in the Philippines where I happen to be at the moment, the proper spec oils are as rare as hen's teeth and most oil dealers, local and importers are sometimes difficult to deal with and convince to get the oil so sometimes I have to make due with what I can find. (The closest spec possible, of course) Recently, Shell released a "newer" version of their Helix oil so from 5W-30 the new one is 5W-40, still good then? I'm asking the local Shell guys if they have the Helix Ultra Professional AF 5W-30 as that is what comes out with their oil matcher on their website. Still no news though. Some of the local 2.4 Pumas have run the local Shell 5W-30 no problems, or so I've been told so I guess I should be good?

Hi All

Just read this thread... and are some what nervous about posting... but here goes Shocked

1 1/2 years ago I decided to replace my 300tdi and buy in 'near the end' of the current Defender,
after a long look (and research) I decided to go for the latest, best condition, 2.4tdci with the
lowest mileage I could find. In the knowledge that I was going to 'sort' it as best I could into a
a quiet / comfortable, long distance vehicle. DIY Servicing was also a factor.

I think the what Oil Question Question (and supplier) is even harder on the 2.2
but for the 2.4 isn't it more simple Question

I appreciate that some have 'Brand Preferences' mine is based on nothing more than I have
have driven around 250K miles in Land Rovers all on Castrol.

This is whats in mine... have I got it wrong Question
