United Kingdom 2007 Defender 110 Puma 2.4 XS CSW Zambezi Silver
Here we go again...
...and this time i'm quite worried.
Driving back from walking the dog, last night.
Got about a 1/4 of a mile from home when loud knocking noise started coming from engine bay.
All gauges reading normal & no warning lights illuminated.
It was getting dark, and the weather was going down hill, so I just parked up and left it overnight.
Anyway, had a look this morning & checked oil + coolant levels (both normal) before starting engine up.
All hopes of a miraculous overnight recovery were instantly dashed.
There is a loud knocking sound coming from the top of the engine, which gets louder + faster with application of throttle.
There are still no warning lights showing on dash.
Tick over is lumpy, but not clouds of smoke coming from exhaust.
RAC have been out & plugged in diagnostics, but there are no fault codes being displayed.
So, will have to wait for garage to open & get recovered tomorrow.
Not sure whether to us MJ Fews in Charfield (as usual) or try Steve Hill in Bristol (have read some good reviews).
RAC man was recommending Finlandya Custom in Glastonbury (one of their approved repairers) as being good with Land Rovers, but I've never heard of them & can't find any reviews.
Has anybody on here used/heard of them?

Cheers,
Andy '57 Defender 110 XS Station Wagon 2.4tdci

Hi rustyboxx,
Thanks for throwing that lifeline!
I'd consider myself to have got off pretty lightly if it was that quick & easy a fix.
I need a big garage bill like another hole in the head at the moment, especially so soon after having the clutch replaced.
Fingers crossed! '57 Defender 110 XS Station Wagon 2.4tdci

If the problem is that the injector has come loose, the bolt should really be replaced as I believe they are stretch bolts.
Personally I would renew the bolt which will hold two of the injectors and leave the top cover off, monitoring for any leaks (may have damaged the sealing washer). If all good after a week or so, refit the cover.

Morning Gents,
Have just removed plastic engine cover and could immediately see that the front two injectors were wet around their seatings.
Briefly fired up the engine & the fork clamping these injectors is rattling like a mini rocker shaft.
Will order new stretch bolts + sealing washers & get sorted by local garage.
I anticipate having a better nights sleep tonight!!!
Thanks again guys. Bow down '57 Defender 110 XS Station Wagon 2.4tdci

I have just had all 4 injector's refurb'd and completed the change myself - I replaced these bolts for new ones, land rover state that they need to be tightened to 4nm and then turn a further 180 degrees which doesn't feel tight enough at all Shocked so I gave them what I thought felt right so I'm going to monitor closely.......even once you get a garage to replace them I would recommend also keeping a close eye for a few weeks.

Hi Puma XS

Has the engine ever had any other work done. It would be strange to my mind for injectors to become loose after 83k miles? Surely something has changed or was not fitted correctly. Did they do any other work when doing the clutch - can you not ask for a dealer print out to see if any warrantee work was done?

Cheers

Hi Nick,

There's not been any obvious work carried out during my 4 years/35k miles of ownership that would have caused the injectors to loosen up.
Interestingly, the chap on Few's service desk said that they went through a phase of this problem being quite a common occurrence, but not so much of late.
He wondered whether the stretch bolts relaxed after while.
I said that was something a Defender owner could never do!! Laughing
Anyway, hopefully all will be sorted tomorrow.

Cheers,

Picked up my Defender from MJ Fews this afternoon.
They'd replaced sealing washers + clamping bolts for all injectors to be on safe side.
Total bill was circa £185, of which approximately £75 was for the parts.
All is good again. '57 Defender 110 XS Station Wagon 2.4tdci
