Thanks Denis, I'm not a novice - just that I've not needed to venture under/into my Defender much since I bought it. Weather permitting I'll give it my best this weekend. Cheers! If it ain't broke don't fix it! |

Any snorkel is all in the fitting.... an incorrectly fitted Safari will be as useless as an incorrectly fitted Mantec, Southdown, Britpart etc. I like my Mantec snorkels, just got to remember to seal the inner bits which most places don't do. The Royal Marine beach landing Rovers use the Mantec ones with extended tops (which also separates air from water (so it can drive in water over the windscreen)... one of the many reasons why Mantec is my fave http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mKEG-uMsHio Glyn |

One reason for not buying a S/H Marine Land Rover! Extreme use indeed.. We'll I've already bought mine and I guess it'll help with the odd fording. If it ain't broke don't fix it! |

Mantec are no way as good as safari...i wouldnt trust those!! My point was more around whatever snorkel you fit - they shouldnt be an excuse to go in 6ft of water Mike |

I agree, and the reason why I have one (not at the moment as waiting for one on back order) is for piece of mind whenever I am off-road.... or even just a flooded road. Why wouldn't you trust a Mantec? I have been usiing them for years, Camel trophy used them for years, Land Rover have them as approved parts, The British forces use them and I have never heard of one person who has had a problem with one. Just a personal thing with the new ones (the older mushroom ones on a defender have a good rep). The only experience i have had was around noticable airflow restrictions from a standard mantec (for the vehcile) on a 300 and td5 - this was the old design. We actually monitored it and then went and swopped it on the same car for a safari. That was the nail in the coffin for me with mantec. Mike |

Personally the top for either should be binned and replaced with a spin top. the Td5 and TDCi shouldn't be fitted with anything other than the mushroom type (Td5 one not 200-300Tdi) or the newer (LR) cheese block type. Someone putting a 300Tdi snorkel on a Td5 is asking for trouble.... bit like putting a escort LE induction kit on a Escort Cosworth.... that is more of an error on the guy fitting it. Glyn |

Sorry you misread a little We had a genuine 300 and a genuine td5 mantec snorkels and ran them - observed engine performance reductions through test book and fitted genuine safaris on both and the issues went away and actually perfromance improved!! Mike |

I've also heard people question airflow through the Mantec snorkel.

You mean the new style plastic jobby as opposed to the old mushroom topped stovepipe ones that have the flexible rubber bit between the inlet and A pillar pipes? Steve. Owned numerous Land Rover vehicles of all shapes and sizes over the decades. Current Defender: A non tarts hand-bagged Puma 110 XS USW. [Insert something impressive here such as extensive list of previous Land Rovers or examples of your prestigeous and expensive items, trinkets, houses, bikes, vehicles etc] http://forums.lr4x4.com I used to be Miserable ...but now I'm ecstatic. |

I tried both. Whatever wind speed you get , the Mantec does not work like the Safari. Because of the top shape the latter, conducts the air (together with bugs and ). Anyway, none of them cope with the air mass sucked by the turbo. If you want a positive pressure then the RAI has to be of bigger diametre and facing the wind.
Anyway, if you look at the bottom section of both there is a hollow space which produces lots of restrictions (head loss). Puma 110" SW ............................................................. Earth first. Other planets later |

I recently took a Mantec (LR one) off mine and haven't noticed any improvement in power... if anything it doesn't feel as responsive.
Also remember that if you run Safari you shouldn't use any aftermarket filters.... so anything you might gain in flow you loose in filter. Glyn |

Tell me more Glynparry - no aftermarket filters with a Safari Snorkel - why's that, I'm interested as I've recently swapped my ITG filter for a standard one and yes I do have a Safari snorkel...
