Mark,

I would be interested to know more, about both the autobox and the air suspension.

Are you still impressed with the autobox? Have you tried it off road, particularly with respect to its ability to hold a chosen gear in low range? Was the tune done by JE specifically to complement the autobox or was it a general tune by BAS, Alive etc?

I saw an advert for ACHSV air suspension in April's Land Rover Monthly and it stated that the access height was 4" lower than standard, which seemed huge to me. Do you know what the overall height of your truck is at access height? It may solve many garage access problems. How do you find the ride and handling, both on road and off?

Loads of questions there, sorry Exclamation

Gary Thumbs Up

Hi Gary

Apologies for not responding sooner - but I've been up to my ears, etc, etc..

Anyway. Yes, I am still very happy with the 6 speed box. I have done around 2000 miles since the conversion, and I am really appreciating the additional gears (previous was a 4 speed). The changes up and down are very smooth. In fact, I was with Chris at CSK earlier this week and he took the Defender out to see what the new box was like. He also commented on how smooth the changes were.

I had a tune to approximately 175 BHP with the new box (JE AutoWorks). This is their "tune plus" package. It provides excellent power in the mid range, while also helping out when setting off. Together with the new box, all is much improved from my point of view.

I have not tried the box off road yet. However, its perfectly good around the uneven smallholding on which I live. I will be testing it more harshly in the near future. I'll update you as and when.

The air suspension is pretty much as you will have read in Land Rover Monthly. The access height can be lowered well below that of an unmodified vehicle. I will take some measurements and photos for you later and put them up. Basically, the height is as you may wish it to be within the potential of the settings. In addition, there is a "sport" and "off road" setting (i.e. low and high - very!). These are fine for the roles inferred. There are also 2 memories for your preferred settings which can be quickly selected using the handset. As I said, I'll get the measurements for you later, but she can go very low ...!

The ride and handling is excellent.

Hope that helps? As I said, I'll get the measurements for you later. If you get any closer to purchasing the suspension, you are very welcome to try my vehicle. In fact, your are welcome to try it regardless!

Best

Mark

My 90 is auto, I've had auto v8 Land Rovers before and if I knew that I was keeping my 110, I'd convert that too.

Greeni - could possibly see the argument in a sports car but for an old bus like a defender then I would say an auto box actually improves the enjoyment on road.

Offroad an automatic is peerless.

Totally, for example..
E46 M3 auto = BAD, one to avoid.
E92 M3 auto = GOOD, one to buy.

Hi Mark

Many thanks for the info. Sounds like they have transformed your truck. I would love to give it a try, alas you are probably a little far from me in Lincolnshire, and I would probably find it difficult to hand it back to you after!

All the best
Gary

Forgot to say im lost between kahn , icon , twisted and je ( je the only one with 6 speeds the rest are 4 speeds ) cost isn't an issue i just want a gearbox with no problems as i will ship the car to Qatar and over here there isn't any good garage or maintenance center for the defender at all .

Thanks
