So I find my driving style / speed is a gauge of how well the is performing (or not as the case may be) and is probably the key to my previously v high mpgs? Anyway for the first time this evening coming home I pulled a right turn from stationary in 2nd and had wheel spin |

Hypothetically speaking of course if for whatever reason the engine / transmission was moving like as if th mounts weren't secure could is possibly impact on the pivot / operation of the clutch / pedal?
And... Should I be surprised that earth cable is rubbing on mount shield (see beow) Click image to enlarge Yep cable will vibrate etc while driving but to my mind it's not close enough (at the moment) to touch it. Crazy thing is at the moment everything is running lovely but I just know it won't last? |

AlanH - I know exactly what you mean. tanks been out on mine due to the fuel breather splitting and possibly / probably letting in dirt.
Money is an issue and as such I can't afford to do what I'd like to do......strip it down and rebuild it properly probably with a different box n engine. that said when mine is running sweet I actually think the set up I have is the dogs dangly's (IRB450). reving it to about 2250rpm and smooth changing up it goes like a dream and it's this that keeps me going. don't laugh but I am now convinced that the engine /transmission moves out of alignment causing vibration that can be felt from the g.box area - don't ask me how cos I have no idea but this all seems to happen along with poor / creaking / heavy movement of the clutch pedal. the issues are linked but for the life of me I have now idea how. also the feel / movement of the handbrake sometimes theres little movement in the handle and other times more (can the gearbox be moving and causing the handbrake cable to be a little more taught? and finally when I turn the engine off sometimes theres a heavy clunk - always thought it was the engine itself but I'm now of the opinion that when the engine is in the wrong position something knocking of something else when you switch off? getting booked in for new engine / transmission mounts and rear end bushes.....and so it continues. such a fantastic vehicle.........nearly. keep the faith. I'd hoped to cure mine within 5 years....looks like it's going to be 6 years. |

just need to make sure its nowhere near the grass - I cut it the weekend and don't want it singed.
....lets wait and see. I'm gonna be real disappointed if one of the engine mounts isn't shagged. |

An issue I had with the breather was incorrectly diagnosed as a leaking tank. I think yours is a 2.4 but on my 2.2 the revised arrangements for the breather should stop it leaking again. See here: http://www.defender2.net/forum/post473406....her#473406 |

Can anyone advise on how much movement there should be in the gearbox via the mounts?
I'm thinking it shouldn't move so much so as to cause this: Click image to enlarge The photo doesn't really show it very well but there is about 1cm+ between cable and shield when stationary.? |

Have you discounted that the cable may have movement in it?

yes and no - as you'll be aware the earth cables are pretty rigid and as such I don't THINK its the cable but rather the heat shield (but I'm not sure).
the other reason but suspecting the heat shield is this; Click image to enlarge looks like it's in the wrong place ie well off centre, and the fact that I get the feeling something (transmission / gbox) vibrates and occasionally seems to MOVE. ! ? |

All engines/gearboxes vibrate and will wear thru anything that is touching it.In the Defenders defence I'd blame Landrover for poor engineering. Pov.spec,ftw. 2006, 110,TD5.

thanks Jimbob7.
what I'm trying to understand is how much movement is typical. when stationary there's a good 10mm gap but clearly while in used the gearbox is moving this much and more. It seems quote a lot to me but I just don't know. furthermore as per the photo the gearbox rhs mount is off centre. is this normal? |

From what I remember the chassis mounting points are slotted so the engine and box can find its natural place then be tightened up. Ray

thanks MK1collector.
not sure they are - I only say that because in the photo the mount appears to be way off centre and there doesn't APPEAR to be any evidence of it being slotted? possibly all tdci mounts are the same? I'd have assumed it would be central or at least close? (do you know I keep wondering whether I've been really lucky (all the cars I've had in the past and virtually no issues) or really unlucky (all the issues I've had with this truck) - still can't decide. |
