Water mud or corroded rear tow socket can throw up funny problems. To rule it out quickly unplug the whole socket under the drivers side rear arch and try rear wiper etc. Ray

The tow socket wiring leads to a grey plug just behind the rear panel in the drivers side rear wheel arch. If you unplug this it should either fix the problem or rule the tow socket wiring out. Ray

There's usually a plastic sheet up near the rear panel above the rear crossmember and it should be under that. Ray

EUREKA!!! I found three broken black earth wires and one green/yellow wire inside the rubber accordion hose between the rear door and O/S quarter panel. Hides many gremlins and wires were soldered then crimped for a very happy outcome. Thanks Mk1 but the tow plug was OK but a little exposed for a major component .
RESULT! 2008 RS4 gone, 123d M Sport, and a Puma 90 XS..

I nearly gave up on this one but by luck i pulled at the wires and four came out the rubber conduit. I now have.....
Rear wipe
Rear wash
Rear de-mist
No stick on brake lights
3rd high level brake light
Engine turns off when rear de-mist is on
Repacked rear wiper motor with grease
Cheers!! 2008 RS4 gone, 123d M Sport, and a Puma 90 XS..

This socket just hangs in mid air behind the fuel tank filler hose directly behind the O/S/R wheel where it must get blasted with 83mph grit and stones which although fine inside is surely asking for trouble? 2008 RS4 gone, 123d M Sport, and a Puma 90 XS..

There should be a plastic shield that covers it and basically runs from the underside of the wheel tub to the top of the rear crossmember Ray
