Hi

The "pipe" you've arrowed is the main engine wiring harness. Nothing should be leaking from it!
In time however you will find that it chafes on the brackets it's secured to, and if not spotted and repaired in time major amounts of smoke will leak from it! |

Did you check the vaccum pump located just below the loom?

Thanks - I thought it looked mainly electrical.
There if defo oil coming from it though; will need a closer look BTW - thanks for the thumbnail tip (I'm only vaguely computer literate) Richard Defender 90 SVX |

I'm going to guess that someone's been a little careless in filling the oil up, spilt some on the top and gravity has taken it down your wiring harness.

I like the overfill option - sounds a cheap fix
- does seem like a lot of oil for that though. I'll have a ferret around tomorrow; vacuum pump already done last year Richard Defender 90 SVX |

Ok - had another look. I really can't see where the oil is coming from apart from the loom

Are you sure that it is dripping out of the harness? There is a fair old draught blowing through there with the engine running, and I'd rather expect there to be oil all over the place if it is.
The thingy that it's pooling on is the vacuum pump for the brake servo. There was a well-known problem with the early version of these (and your Defender is old enough to have an early one) since they are pressure lubricated from the engine, but the early shaft seal was single lipped. Once it became sufficiently cruddy, it leaked. Generally the oil went all over the place, since the fan would blow it around (the inside of my bonnet is still oil-stained from this failure) so your modest puddle isn't typical but it is a possibility. The oil filler is not far away and it is possible that spillage has got onto the harness and tracked down inside. I presume that if you clean the puddle up it returns? Can you gat any better indication of where it is coming from? Just be aware that that area is windy enough for oil to leak upwards under driving conditions. |

Yup - puddle returns after cleaning.
Never thought of a spray issue bouncing off the loom so will check once more. - booked in tomorrow as puddles of castrol edge on the drive are getting tiresome! - will let you know the verdict Richard Defender 90 SVX |

And the verdict was...............vacuum pump. Well diagnosed folks
There was a fine oil spray (only visible when the engine was running) that squirted onto the loom making it look like it was leaking. After a few more miles it got worse & became more obvious to see. I thought the vacuum pump had been done 3 years ago. I assume there is nothing else similar so perhaps it was just bad luck. Anyway, my Landie has now stopping marking his territory & SWMBO is happy there are to be no more oily footprints on the drive...........for now Richard Defender 90 SVX |

Hi folks,
I had this issue two days before Xmas. But I lost the entire sump contents in 5 mins. It cost me 295 for a new part from ford..Land Rover wanted 330. If I could have done without it for a while, I could have gone straight to the suppliers and bought one for as little as 40. As this is a very common fault, I have purchased another one in case it fails again. My friend works in landrover, and he told me that this is so common on the puma engine with both defenders and transits. Very easy to replace, and be sure to clean out the servo pipe, as it more than likely will be contaminated with oil. |
