check that 1 of your tyres is not going soft then check all the track rod ends and other steering joints are tight and don't have play in them, best done with a mate or Mrs wobbling the steering wheel back and forth, DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS,
I hope everyone is well and your land rovers make you happy |

What kind of wheel and boss have you fitted? Is it a fixed wheel to boss that's bolted or a removable one?

The boss is fixed.
I did remove some shims in the swivels last weekend to cure a wheel wobble and have got some new ball joints because the old ones felt a bit 'notchy', but not fitted yet. Would that do it? Also I noticed I'd got a screw in the O/S/F tyre today - but it didnt seem to be deep as I pulled it out with my fingers, so you might have something there also. |

Did you change the length of the drag link ?

Is there anyway for the wheel to rotate against the boss ?

When I change wheels I drive round with a ratchet and socket for a couple of week so I can keep adjusting it as I never get it perfect first time.

No......should I have done?
No it's solid When I change wheels I drive round with a ratchet and socket for a couple of week so I can keep adjusting it as I never get it perfect first time. I take it you mean steering wheels? But mine has changed without undoing the boss nut! Also checked the tyres and no pressure loss. |

The wheel cannot shift on the splined shaft. Similarly there is no link to the steering box that can shift.
However, if you have removed shims off one of the swivels, that will effect the toe, which could make the steering pretty imprecise, Depending on the camber of the road, your dead centre postion will then wander to compensate. I think Ive knackered the swivel bearings fixing my last problem
![]() I had to bash the bejesus out of the drive shafts to free the rusted on drive flange and I think thats done it. I will need to strip both sides completely to check their condition. ![]() Whats the concensus on the quality of the swivel rebuild kits atm? The usual suspects all seem to sell cheapish full Britpart kits or ones with Timken bearings for a bit more. But are the seals different also? Also shall I change the wheel bearings while in there? They dont seem loose or noisey but I wonder if Ive given them some hammer also. Thanks for your help peeps Nick Last edited by Leviathan on 16th Jan 2016 4:08pm. Edited 1 time in total |

Confirmed my fears that the top swivel bearing race has collapsed and the swivel ball is pitted also.
I'm going to replace everything. Are britpart kits OK? Any recommendations for suppliers? Nick |
