2007 Defender 110 Puma 2.4 USW Java Black

Weird temp guage issue

Hi having recently bought my first defender and in fact land rover a couple of months ago i have spent numerous hours and £££ doing her up. She was a 110 2.4 tdci white utility wagon, however she is now the same spec but black with numerous goodies on her. WIll post some photos in a nother thread.

My question...

Since i bought the wagon i have had an issue with the temp gauge and repetadly tried to fix her and done loads of research on here to try and find the issue. I am keeping my fingers crossed that we fixed it today, but will find out tomorrrow.

My temp gauge shows normal (just below half way) the majority of the time, however on the odd occassion, sometimes after long journeys 160 miles plus or just 20 miles the gauge shoots up, sometimes i gradually lowers to cold before doing so. If it goes down slowly i back off the power and it tends to go back to normal, but not always. I find if i keep below 2000 rpm it doesn't happen, but once it does it comes back despite revs.
Turning the engine off and straight back on clears it, but it soon comes back, but not always.

The truck goes in to what must be limp mode as it looses power when gauge shows hot. Only once has the engine management light come on which was yesterday.

I have done the following:

Replaced coolant bottle cap with new cap and seal.
Checked pipes which seam to run at right temperatures i.e hot when they should be and cold when they shouldn;t be.
Removed dash and checked electronics behind gauge all looks ok.
Undone and re done up earth cable from battery to gear box. (done today)
Undone earth point on bulkhead behind engine which carrys 3 earthing cables, cleaned and put back on. (done today)
Checked terminals on battery (were slightly loose) problem still occured after
Undone two bolts from ecu bracked behing cylinder head (black bracked) and re tightened after cleaning. (done today)
Cleaned out radiator fins and intercooler fins today as they did look slightly dirty.

New CHT sensor going on tomorrow.

Any sugestions would help. I must admit i do hope the issue has now gone after todays work.

It is worth noting that on some long and short journeys it doesn;t happen so we made the decision today now to put meter on anything when the gauge was showing fine.

Did find these today. One plug which has previously been cut off sat on lower engine just by chance it was still there as I have done around 1000 miles since I bought it. Other photo is a cable cut at both ends which is on a bracket on rear of gear box. ??

Also worth noting the truck was ownedby utility company so they likely had other things connected.
Oh yes on checking engine it never seams over hot and fan seams to cut in fine.

Still concerned as to what the cable is i have found cut at both ends which is on a bracket connected to the rear of the gearbox though?? One end looks single core (although not sure) and the other end after connector is 3 core???

the big cable that has been cut is a taco graph speed cable, So the truck would have had a Taco & probably a speed limiter fitted. you will see on the big cable's plug that it has locking wire and a lead seal, the seal will have a number on it, which is the taco centre which calibrated it.. it is safe enough to unplug and just get rid of, or just leave as is..

I would imagine that the other cables are either also from the speed limiter/ tachgraph or something similar that the utility company used.

the one at the rear of the gearbox is definitely for a taco and has nothing to do with temperature. My 1986 90 is currently on a full rebuild, with new chassis, Paint etc.. Very much a hybrid, TD5 Chassis, tub & bulkhead with a 200TDI and LT77 GB Painted in Stornoway Grey

2 years off the road, but getting close to completion now

You are a star, that makes perfect sense.

You are right there is a locking wire on it, which is what i noticed first! I pulled the cbale further out to make a better photo. For future potential is there any value in leaving this on even though its not connected? I just wonder if i cut it nicely and blanked both ends off, would it potentially save anyone a great deal of money and time if they wanted to add this otpion in? I must admit i have already considered this for myself, so its trange it was there.

I hate not knowing what things are, especailly cut cables.

THe cable is two in the same, just different ends, so thats that issue sorted.

Engine Management light came on again this morning, so this time i just ignored it. It did appear to go in a slight limp mode, but i kept driving and after another 120 miles it arrived in one piece. Just waiting on garage to call to hopefully get new CHT sensor fitted today.

Anytime, I used to fit and calibrate Tacho's & Speed Limiters for Scania Trucks so easily recognised..

If I were you I would keep the plug on, but cut the cable all the way to the plug.. that way it keeps the cr4p out and doesn't really do any harm..

Got this one fixed. Fitted new CHT sensor on back of engine. Easy enough to do so did it myself and hey presto, no issues with temp guage or limp mode since.
