Puma Rear diff noises
Just got my 110 Puma. 1000km and there seem to be noises on the rear diff when changing gears (mostly between 1 st and 3 rd).

Almost sound like play on the teeth. When I engage the gear it "klangs" like things banging together - thus me thinking some play....?

The question is when should I take it in to get looked at? What other symtoms should I be looking at/observing.

Or is this this diff in any case just a noisy diff? Should be very concerned?

Marius, am having the same issues on my 90 (14Kkm), just took it to LR N1 City. The mechanic who came on a drive with me says that only they have only seen the rear diff problem on the 110.

I'm waiting for their call as to what the problem is, my indie mechanic seems to think that the 3rd gear is a bit loose on the shaft, causing all the clunking when going in and out of 3rd.

I got my rear diff replaced under warranty on my 90 just a few months ago. So that's not just the 110. No more clunking since then, works like a charm now Smile

are you sure the clunk is from the rear diff? I would rather wait until party is over. Make the dealer to take the rear prop off (either from the parking brake or rear flange). If the slack is not from the diff then you have probably a clutch issue. Puma 110" SW

The clunk is just after shifting somewhere at the back (diff I would say). If you take ALLOT!! of care shifting shoftly it is not as pronounced, but no one can drive that that.

I know what you mean. Not being able to look at I would say it is eirther the diff (weird) or wacked coil springs from the clutch. Take it to a "good" dealer who knows what they are doing.

I heard LR produced a batch of new faulty clutch discs (yes! the new version).

Anyway, nothing to worry about unless you plan to drive up to tanzania these days. Puma 110" SW

I wonder if this could be a combination of Rear diff and clutch? Allot of guys I read about has allot of rear diff problems - some on their 4th diff after 40k

Get the rear diff replaced a.s.a.p. I am on diff # 7 already and only 30K on the clock. The problem I am having is becasue my car is more than 1 year old and has more than 20K, LRSA will not replace it with a new diff and keep on replacing it with a recon ones! I only found this out after diff # 7, now I am fighting this and want a new one!

Had a new rear diff at 10,000 miles, but it started making noises at 5k. The stealership just didn't believe me. Got a new one but at 36,000 the rear UJ started to make noises too. Got that changed as well. Is there a connection? Don't know but you might like to monitor yours.

So I had a long chat with Peter from N1 City - the old mechanic who only works on Defenders.

During the test drive he agreed there was excessive play in the drivetrain, and he says he looked at the propshaft, rear driveshafts and made sure everything was tightened as required. He also says that due to the different gearbox and clutch on the Puma, there is more drivetrain backlash than on the Td5. Confused

There was definitely less clunking when I drove home, I'll see in the following month how that holds up. The landy is due for service on Feb 2nd, so will tell them to look at it again if needed.

I will go in after the new year to get it looked at as well.

Will keep you guys up to date as to whether it was clutch/diff or combo.

Andrew, I will have a look this afternoon. I assume it's at the location where the shaft enters the rear diff?

No, where it joins the transferbox/park brake drum. As you are under the vehicle check all the prop bolts there are 4 at each end of each prop Thumbs Up 130's have feeling's as well you know Smile
