All the quad trailers at work are un-braked and plated at 750kg or less for this very reason. It was actually a P8 that I found a massive pain behind my 90. Though it didn't have cage sides, which would improve the visibility. My dad has one which I borrowed to collect an engine (yes officer it's well under 500kg...) and it was a fiddle to reverse. Bounced around when empty too.
Now have an LM125G which tows like a dream behind the Land Rover. Don't know how I managed without it, a Defender without an accompanying big trailer is only half the story |

I have found the source of my confusion. The rules have changed (or at least the gov.uk website has) in the last year... yay.
I printed this out in November 2014 which clearly says MAM for 2013- and weight for 1997-2013: Click image to enlarge For me (as mentioned) that actually makes quite a big difference, and I'm a bit off they changed it without making any sort of a fuss about it. |

They change it a few times im sure i remember them saying that the trailer test removed the trailer weight restriction when i did it eg any weight of trailer thats legal, where as before it was limit to 3500kg trailer and i bet its different now.
So as above a coupled braked 4ton trailer would be ok Mike |

At one point the 1997-2013 B+E didn't have a weight limit on the trailer, so you could get a tractor unit based on a van and tow mini-artic trailers.

There has always been a total train weight. Think it's 8250kg.

Just to avoid confusion as a number of people have quoted the old rules...
https://www.gov.uk/towing-with-car/driving...ou-can-tow From the 16th Jan last year there was a suttle change mainly impacting those that passed their test after Jan '97 (and before sometime in 2012) holding a category B license, now instead of it being the gross weight of the combined 'train' being 3500kg as a limit, it's the weight being the restriction I.e. You can tow a trailer with a greater gross weight than 750kg and more specifically greater than a 3500kg train gross as long as the 'train' weight is no higher than 3500kg. 2003 Zambezi Silver TD5 110 XS SW overland prepped.... 2004 Santorini Black TD5 110 XS SW left hooker for sale! 2004 Alpine White TD5 110 left hooker (work in progress) |

Hold on, I think you've got it backwards?
It's gone from being actual train weight to plated maximum train weight. |
