Will they compromise the defenders towing ability? |

Just wondered if you clever guys at Alive are able to offer your 90 'comfort' springs without having to drop the ride height the 1.5 inches? I would love the more complaint set-up but without losing the ground clearance so often required in Australia off road. YOLO... You Only Live Once...

I've looked at this issue for both the 90 and 110 and could design some adjustable spring platforms, so you can run std or lower ride height..
Whats everyone opinion? Cheers Tim It doesn't matter how bad it is, It can always get worse... 2013 Bowler 110 (Sold) 2016 Bowler 90 Rally Spec (Sold) |

Well I have now had Alive's comfort springs fitted to my 90 for a week, so thought I would feedback some initial impressions. There is no doubt that ride quality is significantly improved over the standard 90 CSW setup. The difference is most noticeable over smaller bumps, particularly rumble strips, cattle grids and level crossings. Previously these would all send a considerable vibration with associated clattering and rattling through the whole vehicle, now they are barely perceptible. I had the springs installed with genuine spring isolators top and bottom all round, so some of this effect may be coming from the isolators rather than the springs. The main reason for fitting the isolators was to regain some of the ride height lost with the lowering springs. I'm very pleased with the resulting 'stance'. It's a touch lower than standard, but you'd struggle to tell and it now sits perfectly level (previously slightly nose-up).
Handling is largely the same as before. There is maybe a touch more roll through fast corners, but very difficult to tell. Mine has standard ARBs front and rear and at the moment I certainly don't feel a need to upgrade the rear ARB. Overall Alive's comfort springs are very well judged. They really do take the edge off the harshness, but still retain a good degree of firmness in terms of handling and body roll, which is probably quite a difficult balance to strike. If you soften the ride right down to give great comfort, you increase body roll and reduce handling performance. Firm it up to get the handling back and you lose the ride comfort. These are a great balance of the two. It is worth mentioning that the ride is still on the 'firm' side - it's certainly no Rolls Royce! Bigger potholes and bumps still upset it as they always have, but I suspect this is down to the characteristics of beam axles and the fundamental suspension system, which we all recognise is some way off a modern car's all-round independent suspension. All in all I think this is probably about the optimum setup for a 90 that spends most of its life unladen on the road (as mine does). Also worth mentioning that mine is a 2005 Td5 and has done around 55k miles, the springs removed were the originals so probably a bit tired. I am running Koni Heavy Track shocks set to their softest setting (both before and after the spring change). 2005 Td5 | 90 Station Wagon | Tonga Green |

Thanks for the write up. If I go down this route, I will probably fit the Bilstein B6 dampers too, and leave the ARB's as standard. I will also do a write up, but as I'm away a lot over the next month, it won't be till March or April. 2016 D4 HSE 1998 110 TUM HS FFR Hard Top XD WOLF 1982 Series 3 SWB Petrol |

An option that i'm currently using is a set of Terrafirma front light duty +2's springs on the rear of my 90. They are 200Lbs spring rate and approx 39/40cm uncompressed. I regain ride height with some spacers.
They provide a nice rate reduction over standard but not too soft. |
