At the moment just replace the switch, however having dissassebled my mates RRC light stalk a couple of months back to see what happens, and having advised him to rewire his headlights with relays, then I will seriously consider that option in the not too distant future.
that said I have got the same to do on my 80" to install the H4 lights a S3 88" to re chassis for the wife. Various jobs on her D1 to fix !! Mates RRC V8 to finish HIS RRC 200 to re gearbox Wifes peugeot to have the rear end fixed after some git arse ended it and drove off 6 weeks ago House to rebuild and garage to be fitted out as my new workshop .... Ah the list goes on But yes tonight I just need to get the lights working asap as I am currently borrowing the sons spare Disco on stupid big tyres, crappy ill adjust Hid lights .... beggars can't be choosers He who dies with the most toys wins Defender 90 & 110, S1 80", Disco 1, S111 88 LRSOC & CVLRC |

That's about £100 more than the same switch in a green Lucas box!
Expensive box! |

Megatode...Just a heads up ...Your problem may be the indicator/headlights stalk as it usually goes before the light switch....
You could always buy the Lucas switches which are no where near the same price as the LR one....and it wouldn't surprise me if the LR one was a Lucas Dead easy to change over but steering wheel has to come off to do the indicator stalk . N |

Pretty certain it is that switch as I know its a common fault.
Also when you switch from sidelight to headlights they work part way through the swipe but then all lights including dashboard when the switch locks into position. I know what you mean about the main stalk, as we have been having issues on an RRC where bad earthing from the bulb holder on the n/s has caused too much current to melt the plastic around the contacts for main beam causing them to poor contact on the wipers. I just got him to install relays last night! I considerred a Lucas one for £30 but given the warning I opted for Genuine parts. Lucas = Genuine Parts once it's out of the box.
Same production line, same factory, same (appalling) design and quality! |

To be fair to Lucas - do they make the switch to be used the way jlr wire it?

Yes.
The main problem (as I see it) is that the input feed used for the headlamps is attached under the dipped beam contact rivet, which means on main there's a fairly inadequate copper strip connecting the feed to the main beam contact rivet. The only connection between the rivets and the copper strip and feed wire comes from the tightness of the rivet, which passes through the thermoplastic support piece. With the current involved and consequent heat once oxidisation sets it, it is pretty well doomed. If you are good with a soldering iron you can solder a bridge over the contact strip and solder the feed wire tag to the rivet, and then it is fairly bomb proof. It takes practice and a certain amount of skill to do this without melting the switch though. With a little thought it could have been made entirely adequate for the job, but someone would have had to pay! |

Well that sounds like a good explanation of the issue - are there any photos of the fix you have suggested?
Looks similar, maybe the plug is different - £20.83 http://www.autoelectricalspares.co.uk/luca...-438-p.asp or half that price again on ebay. |

Well, it took 16 minutes to swap the switch out. Success.
As you can see bellow, the terminal had finally melted down into the plastic allowing the contact to be broken. What worries me also is that the guage of the wires on the new switch is smaller than that on te original. So I definatly think its time to look into the relay loom. Nice find there Arsath.
I am ordering two right now. One for the 110 and another for the 80" I have been meaning to install H4s in her since I upgraded to an Alternator this summer. nThat sorts out the simplified wiring nicely He who dies with the most toys wins Defender 90 & 110, S1 80", Disco 1, S111 88 LRSOC & CVLRC |
