Judder on take off and reverse
Hi, I've got a 2002 110 ex untility defender, There is really excessive judder on take off and when reversing when releasing the clutch and everything is taking up drive. I'm no mechanic but it feels like the props juddering. I've owned lots of discovery but this is my first defender, I know they are not silky smooth rides but this is a lot worse than any of the discos I've had. I was wondering maybe being utility and spending a lot of its life off road if certain parts were worn out maybe, where's the best place to start looking as its bugging me now! Cheers

Not sure on the clutch, feels fine other that this, how would I check the uj for wear? What is the dmf please?

DMF = Dual Mass Flywheel.

No DMF on mine as it's a Puma, however I had similar problems and it was the clutch.
They told me the clutch was worn but not really badly but the friction plate was pitted.
That might explain the juddering which I had too.

Ah I see, sounds expensive to me! How could I tell if it is the clutch or dmf?

That's the problem, you can't unless it's apart.
And yes, it is expensive!

It got worse for me until one day it suddenly and unexpectedly got so bad it was slipping all the time in every gear. You'd change, bring up the clutch and no drive until about 2 secs later. I just got home and then needed recovery to dealer.
Other members here are more experienced on the mechanics and spannering side than me.

It can't be prop balancing as that'd be during drive not moving off.

UJ's would need to be checked for rotational play in them, I'm not sure how much play they should have as standard.
They do have tolerances of a certain amount of play in them from new.

Is it better after everything has warmed up a bit after a few miles?

When does it do it, as soon as the clutch starts to bit or just before you have finished raising the pedal?

Yeah it is a bit better once warmed up and it does it just as the clutch bites

It doesn't matter how gently you disengage the clutch it happens, but it's fine once your going along although you do have to lift the clutch slowly after a gear change

I have a 2002 TD5 90 that has some clutch judder when the vehicle is first used and once warmed up it goes away. It occurs from when the clutch bites to the fully released position. The vehicle has done 123,000 miles and is on its original clutch. I put it down to either dampness or a small amount of oil on the clutch plate. Although due to the mileage, the clutch could be on its way out but it does not slip at any time.

Is the judder something I should be concerned about? ------------------------------------------------

Jeez, 123k on original clutch. Puma one's must be made of cheese!

Mines done 143k but I didn't get any history with it so have no idea if the clutch has been done

Take props off and throughly check all the UJ's and slides, but it does sound more like the DMF to me.
