Thread revival. My truck is going into dealer monday. Reading this entire thread from the beginning again, seems not a bad idea to ask them to install this LR012616 breather heating element, no? Recent winters have been mild, but not excluded we will get a hard frosty one.
Now, do I understand correctly that the standard dealer installation would mean that this breather heating element would only work if the cabin ventilator fan is switched on (irrespective if in position 1, 2, or 3), and that if the fan is in the off position, that electric element will also be off, get no power? And is the mentioned fuse a standard component of this LR012616 installation, and is it easy to access it to take out the fuse in summer? Eric You never actually own a Defender. Eric,
why not connect it (using a relay) under a 12V switched (on with ignition)? May be a more simply solution.... And why not use a temp controlled switch? like I used This one on mine and it "connect" the heater only when the external temp is less than -10 °C Discovery 5 td6 HSE Stornoway Gray Outback Engineering Limited Edition IID Pro MV License |

Daniele, not sure I want my dealer to install such temp controlled switch.
I would be happy enough if it is confirmed that this heater comes on only when the cabin ventilation/heating fan gets switched on, and when there would be a very accessible fuse which would allow me to deactivate the heater permanently when outside temps do not warrant its use. Can you, or bpman confirm that this is the way the system works standard from LR? Thanks, Eric You never actually own a Defender. Eric
The standard LR install switches/engages the breather heater element on with the ignition and takes the feed from the blower. I did remove the fuse when not required but in the end, I rewired mine after the mess my dealer made and i used convoluted tubing and a dashboard mounted on/off switch. To be honest the heater is only required when temps drop below -10/15c |

Anyone have a spec for the heater used? How many watts is it consuming?

Temps below -10°C, not so unusual, so seems a good idea. As to the mess your dealer made, that's no good, because "your dealer then is my dealer today"... How could they make a mess in the first place, this is a original Land Rover item, so that must be accompanied by clear installation and wiring instructions for the dealer, no? Eric, Easy to check, take off the connector from the heater and check with a multimeter (voltage tester) ..... Discovery 5 td6 HSE Stornoway Gray Outback Engineering Limited Edition IID Pro MV License |

Hello, found this the other day. Has some useful information about diesel engines and required modifications for low temperatures. It does mention about heated breathers amongst other things.
Not from land rover, but still useful. http://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&rct=j...iBRt3v94eQ |

Out of curiosity...
Does anyone know of someone heating the breather pipe with coolant? I'm thinking bleed from the top of the rad, heater circuit or EGR cooler. I dislike the electric idea, specifically as it comes on with the blower. I've a FBH that would trigger the blower to come on when the engine isn't running. I also don't fancy running yet more wires from inside the cabin. It's also quite pricey! |

You could fit a oil catch can instead, the issue is the engine needs to breathe

If youve some pics kicking about, sure send them over.
I'm just trying to be different. There's plenty of waste heat coming from the engine. Seems mad to install an electric heater to make more. Normally its a catch tank all the way. However, I dont want any issues with water ingress. My induction system is sealed with a snorkel so keeping the breather routing standard is a bonus. |

You don't need a heater unless you are in temps less than -15c, when I was in the Arctic, we saw -38c and based on experience from other travellers we switched on at -15c
Probably no need to be "different", might be best to stick with tried and tested solutions? After all, the heater is sold/fitted in Scandinavia and Russia .. |

I'm prepping for a trip to Norway, Lapland etc in winter. The heater is probably wise.
Re being different.... point taken. However, if I can think of a mod that's cheaper and avoids yet more wiring I might give it a go. If nothing else it will be an interesting engineering challenge. |
